For me it's a tie between Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment.

As a side note, I can't help but be amazed at the amount of people listing Oblivion, which I honestly consider a bad and poorly designed game. I guess tastes differ a LOT...

Seriously. What happened to creative licenses? Every time someone wants to make a fantasy rpg they cobble together a "world" populated by races X,Y, and Z and then rename them, make up religions and histories, its like going to Build-A-Bear and asking for an RPG, but instead you get a bear, and you pretend its a RPG. Buts its not. Its just a bear.

I'm hoping Dragon Age doesn't turn out like that...everyone is saying spiritual successor to BG2 and inspired by George RR Martin, but I've been seeing a lot of suspiciously WoW looking armor in the trailers. And anyone who puts Manson on a soundtrack is immediately scrutinized.

I do. And i agree. Of all the RPG's i have played, that's by far the best, in my opinion. Second place is definitely Baldurs Gate 2.

I rarely agree with anyone on anything, but in this case I totally do. If I had to attach the linearity of numbers to an abstract opinion the list would go

1.Planescape Torment
2.Baldurs Gate 2
3. Fallout 2
4. Deus Ex (its counts because it gave me more options per level than most titles give me all game)

I tried playing that , but I just couldn't get into it. I had no clue as to what I was supposed to do inside that weird zombie graveyard factory thing, and I had absolutely no desire to find out what would happen to The Nameless One. He just seemed so unlikable.

Dungeon Siege. Best RPG ever.
HOLY CRAP i totally forgot about Dungeon Siege! That was my addiction for so long! amazing game!
HOLY CRAP I though that game was AWFUL!

I cannot even comprehend HOW those designers would come up with the idea of a long starting chapter with just one character that can only left-click attack monsters is a good idea for a game.
That's like playing an RTS game with just one unit! Actually a warcraft3 map with just one hero actually would make a better game.

Well, I enjoyed Morrowind, Oblivion and the Fallout series, but I have to admit that JRPGs are my main RPG love.

I love the Final Fantasy series, particularly VI, VII, X and XII, while I also love Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

Also, the Kingdom Hearts games and The World Ends With You are also really good RPGs, since it's nice to see something different and still so well done.

Hahaha. You have no idea. You are one of those gamers that tries to identify on a very personal level with the character and that's fine. I guess the Nameless One's appeal is the mystery surrounding his identity and immortality, and yes the very beginning may not have grabbed most players by the balls, but the first thing I personally noticed that was strange other than the art direction (I had never touched a Planescape Pen and Paper source book before this point) was the lines and lines and lines and lines and lines ad infinitum of detailed text. It's like Chris Avellone went and said, "If we can't detail everything happening with graphics, we'll write it all out for then to read!"

The KoTOR series ranks as my top RPG series of all time. I love them both. Fallout 3 is also among my favorites, although as a pure RPG I don't like it as much.
I've never played Mass Effect though, which is strange considering that everyone here who's recommended the KoTOR games has also recommended Mass Effect... I will play it one day though!

Pokemon for me, I hadn't realized that it was even an RPG until later in my life, and imagine my shock when I realized that I had wasted hundreds of hours on a turn based RPG. I don't like turn based gameplay at all.

[sub]Oh lord not the rocks! *Gets buried in an avalanche of turn based fans*[/sub]

Baldur's Gate Saga hands down.
I still play those games, all combined into one super huge game with the BGComplete MOD.
Unbeatable. Just freaking spectacular.

KOTOR is without a doubt the best RPG I ever played.
Mass effect is Quite good too but just doesnt have the same feel to it.
