Well, except that RD expanded massively on the levels and made support conversations actually useful. Isn't FE more of a tactics game though? It's got a big RPG influence, I suppose, but... hrm. A mix, I suppose.

Anyways, Chrono Trigger is pretty awesome. But I'm just playing through that now; haven't finished it yet. So I'll go with Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

Because it was better than Path of Radiance.

Man this is going to age me.....but the best RPG/RPG Series that I ever played was the "Bard's Tale Series" on my IBM PC PS/2. Good memories.

Yeah, it really was better, but I think to truly enjoy the experience of the story you need to play both. That's why I look at it that way.

I'm that way with games with sequels that have great stories... Half Life, Metroid Prime, stuff like that. Whenever I feel like playing them I always have to play them in order.

Does Pokémon count? If not, It's a toss-up between S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or extensively modded Oblivion.

Skies of Arcadia, if you got into it, the story would just drag you down and have you so hooked you cant stop playing.

I have a few:Fallout 3(not a pure-breed RPG,but oh well),Final Fantasy,Mario RPG,Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga,and the whole Paper Mario series.
Fallout 3 is far more traditional RPG than all those JRPG's, there's no choice in them it's all linear levelling, Bethesda games are the closest thing to D+D you can get.
Well,I was referring more to game-play.When I think of the abbreviation "RPG",the first thing that comes to mind is turn-based games. But,that's just me.Also,JRPGs are odd, when it comes to normality...

I'm going to sound like the biggest dork, but it's final fantasy 7 - My friend introduced me at a young age, it was one of the first RPG's I'd played, and I've loved it ever since.

Mine would either be Golden Sun (my first real JRPG), or Tales of Symphonia (my first console RPG).

If I'm gonna go by my currect stash of games, I'll have to go with either Persona 4 or Tales of Vesperia.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic the sequel sucked but the original is so good they are going to do a Massive Multiplayer Online RPG of it that will consume my very life and soul.

Computer = Planescape: Torment or Wizardry: Crusaders of the Dark Savant
Old School = Shining in the Darkness or Phantasy Star 2 or Super Hydlide
Next Gen = Fallout 3 (not like there's a ton of choices)

Good thing I found this thread: I've been looking for a nice suck-me-in RPG for a while. With that said, can anyone recommend something with a great story I can really invest myself into? I have X360, PC, and DS. Thank you!

Stuff I've played (not much):
KOTOR 1 & 2 (liked these for story, freedom of choice, customization)
Mass Effect (liked this for same as above, but it's next-gen and I like the Bioshock-esque radial menus)
Some of FFIV (Final Fantasy isn't really my thing, as I HATE HATE HATE HATE grinding)
Oblivion (liked the open world, the graphics, the freedom)
Fallout 3 (ditto)

Problem with FO3/Oblivion is that when I'm given full freedom, I sometimes get bored because it seems all my different possible actions can't (and don't) have any effect on the world. It's the reason I couldn't get into GTA: A totally open world with no consequences kinda just makes me lose interest altogether. Please bear this in mind. That said, feel free to ignore it, if something's good I will like it.

I'm a Western RPG person. Woot BioWare is all I can say. I'm a sci-fi & fantasy fan as well. If anyone can pretty much just recommend something along the lines of KOTOR or Mass Effect that's pretty much what I'm going for. If there's s

Hmm. I've gone about 2 weeks without mentioning it.

I shall have to be punished.
Quoted for truth. Knights of the Old Republic is a good second for story and character development and obviously the Baldur's Gate series.

Golden Sun is pretty good, but loses out because of the squiffy ending.

The original Final Fantasy Tactics takes the gold prize. Very good plot, best story I've seen in a JRPG, nicely challenging (I remember a few battles that were ridiculous, especially since I always wanted to keep all my party members*), job system really damn addicting. Oh and one of the weirdest final bosses in any game I've played.

*Note to people who didn't play it: If you leave a noncanonical character dead for more than 3 rounds, you lose them permanently.

Kotor and its sequel were absolutely amazing to me. FANTASTIC story, characters i actually cared about (some of them) and an all around enjoying game. There will never be an RPG better.
