Mass Effect is higher on my list of favorite games, but I first thought of Fallout 3 when I saw this thread.

Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are certainly the greatest non-caption screened leveling RPGs out there.
Super Mario-o RPG is definately there for caption screened leveling RPGs.
The Best RPG ever though has got to be the RBY Pokemon games.

It's an MMO but guild wars wins hands down
sir. i love you.

but in my opinion. Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon is the best game ever.

the game was about 4 people:
a super sayin
a fat ninja
a secret agent with lime green hair as long as she is tall
and a robot.
defending japan from people who want to turn the continent into a stage so they can dance.

and the impact boss battles were awesome

Sir, Please marry me.

OT: I could go with something easy like Mass effect or Dragon age and get off just fine, but I honestly have to say...Jade Empire.

the only RPG iv played set in a somewhat romanticized far-east, this game literally kept me home from school. The Combat system was awe inspiring, and the various fighting styles meant that there was something for everyone, if you wanted to kick people in the head till they fell over a la Chuck Norris, if you wanted to poke at someone fifty thousand times in rapid succession, or just maul at them like a big smelly bear. Not to mention an interesting cast of side characters, all of whom provided a great collection of dialog and a great sense of care and consideration into their health and being, making it all the more tragic if and when something bad were to befall them, and an ending which, Not even kidding, ended with you killing or saving the Asian representation of Water, and becoming Emperor.

Hands down one of the best RPG's, possibly games of all time, and I will eat the shirt on my back if anyone says otherwise.
I loved that game! That was an awesome RPG, good ol' mystical ninja for n64 and snes.

Not my favorite but anyone know of Evolution: Far Off Promise? It was a great game with the main character, Mag, who fought with a gargantuan hand that hides in a little backpack.

Xenogears is my absolute fave, but earthbound and Kingdom Hearts II are right at its heels. Illusion of Gaia gets honorable mention, too.

I personally loved FF7 and FF7: Crisis Core. The battle system, [albeit turnbased in FF7], was done very well, and [despite the turnbased FF7], the combat was still fast paced. It wasn't like in FFX where you had all day to decide what you'd do with your turn, FF7 and CC both required you to think on your feet.

On the topic of FF games, I really don't see why people liked FF9 so much. The game was short, most of the characters quite unlikeable and annoying, the story was stupid, and it was needlessly stretched out over 4 discs. Not to mention the stupid anti-magic temple where they don't tell you that it is all anti-magic. That was the biggest kick in the balls ever.

In the end, I suppose my favorite RPGs were FF7, FF7: CC, ME2, FO3, and DA:O. Excellent games.

I'll join the group that likes ChronoTrigger and Skies of Arcadia.

But by far my favorite rpg is...

Rhapsody: a Musical Adventure!

Not only an rpg, but the one and only rpg musical! With terrible singing!

=O

Oh, shut up!

I also greatly enjoyed Lufia 2, as well as half of the Breath of Fire and WildArms games.

Pokémon, hands down; those games are just downright addictive!

Of course, the Kingdom Hearts games and Paper Mario games are close competitors, but none of them can match the sheer power of the Pokémon series!

Fallout- marvelous quest design, memorable characters, and multitudes of ways to play. Planescape as a close second for the amazing story (best story in any game ever) and great characters.

My favorite RPG has got to be FFIII/VI. I first played it on the SNES when it was first released. It has a great story, diverse cast of characters(my favorite is Gogo by the way),and a funny, evil villan that actualy does what he sets out to do.
