AGE OF EMPIRES II is THE best RTS game.
but if you want a recent RTS game i'd recommend
Men of War,
Rome: Total War,
Command&Conquer Tiberian Sun + Firestorm,
the Commandos Series (1 2 3 only)
Stronghold 1 or 2
there's also Mount & Blade: Warband that has some strategy in it...
Black & White 2 perhaps...although it's wierd.
and a REALLY good old RTS and Space game: Imperium Galactica 2
