Best Sci-fi show

Farscape was really underrated. Yeah, some of the episodes were cheesy or childish. But there were some that were particularly good, and they had some very interesting ideas that I wish could have been more fully realized (like Crichton's psychological battles).

However, for pure start-to-finish enjoyment, I've got to go with Firefly. It benefits from being so short they didnt have time to make a bad episode. But it's the one show I've re-watched more than any other, and it still stands up quite well.

I don't think Buffy is in the sci-fi genre, though with the terminator at college it certainly had some of it.

My favourite SF show (and indeed, my favourite show overall) is the X-Files. Great characters, acting, and stories. I also like Doctor Who, love Firefly with a passion, and recently discovered Battlestar Galctica which I am really enjoying.

Classic Dr Who (1-7), though skip some of 5, most of 6 and the early 7.

Classic Dr. Who would technically be Seasons 1 - 28 when the show started in 1969.

Though I do love the New Doctor Who a lot myself, they are probably the best Sci-fi imo.

However great show in the Sci-Fi genre would include BattleStar Galactica, the New series. Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. And I personally enjoyed Caprica and Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Edit: Fringe is also a GREAT Science Fiction show.

I love me some Gundam (been called the Star Trek of Japan). Also Eureka 7 is pretty sweet. On the American side, Star Wars: the Clone Wars. Yeah, I don't watch any sci-fi TV shows that're live action, the CG always bugs me.

also, BSG/Farscape/Firefly is the holy trinity of space opera and Sarah Connor Chronicles gets huge props for it's second season treatment of AI evolution.

OT: Here comes a completely original response: Firefly. I would put the new Doctor Who as a close runner-up, but I don't really consider Doctor Who to be sci-fi, despite what the wonderful image above suggests.

Every Sci-fi show I've really liked went south (Eureka (1-3 were fantastic) and Fringe) except ST:TNG.

My favourite is Battlestar Galactica. I was obsessed with that show when I first watched it. Seriously enthralled, it's all I could think about. I've never been so drawn in by a TV show.

I also love Firefly, Doctor Who, Star Trek TOS and Fringe.

Doctor Who for me. I can only say "new who" because I haven't watched nearly enough of the older series. But it ranks as my favorite sci fi show. Although, I have started watching Firefly and the X Files, both of which are really good, and have been considering watching Star Trek TNG.

No one has said it yet so The Twilight zone and The Outer Limits have some good ones. But overall I like Star Trek all of them spare Enterprise.

I would say Star Trek TNG. I loved the characters and some of the episodes are mind blowingly deep at times.

TNG and DS9 are on equal footing for me. They both present a very distinct and yet fundamentally different interpretation of Gene's vision. The Next Generation represents the very ideal of the Federation, as a utopian society that had moved past prejudice and hardship to build something truly great. The Enterprise's crew were the best and brightest, led by the very model of a starfleet officer.

If TNG focused on the ideal of the Federation, then DS9 focused on the reality. The utopia of the Federation faces hardships both within and without, and while it is an admirable aspiration to be like the model crew of the Enterprise, the reality is that such a goal is difficult to achieve without conflict and hardships. Particularly striking me is the barrier the Federation faces with Bajor and their religion based society. Facing people who have yet to pass over the threshold that the Federation has achieved causes friction, and it is never as easy to maintain the utopia as it seems.

Because of that, I tend to lean towards DS9, but I still love TNG. TNG shows the ideal endpoint of humanity, while DS9 follows the difficult path we walk to get there.

Seriously? Seriously? Wow... Yes DS9 was definitely all about the REAL Federation. LMAO!!! Dude, there is no REAL Federation. If there were Star Trek MMOs would work! There's the ideals of Star Trek and there's capitalizing on an epic failure to know how to write stories within those boundaries; I give you DS9, Voyager, Enterprise... Dear god did they milk those teats half to death. Hell lets be frank, three quarters of the way to death never mind half.

Did Q like DS9? No, no he did not. And he said it all: "Picard never would have hit me." And Sisco finished it nicely: "I'm not Picard." No, no you are not. Your not even human apparently, which is really great. Write a story about people who aren't people. Point... missed. Paramount should sue Rick Berman who has admitted he had no idea what he was doing with the franchise and just tried to milk it for all it was worth. He was shocked to get the chance to make Voyager. I was just sickened, guess it shows a certain short sightedness on his part.

Fringe is pretty interesting, so is Eureka. I'm not one for following series that often these days though, a whole lot of Lost syndrome floating around. It's probably thanks to the overwhelming success of the X-Files which likewise never wrapped things up one way or another to my knowledge and certainly didn't in the series. Babylon 5 was a remarkable piece of writing, no two ways about it, and Crusades would have been amazing if they'd been able to keep it's funding alive without ruining the show. The few episodes they have are awesome.

I say only three quarters to death because the 1st new movie they came out with recently was great and I'm looking forward to the follow up.

Oh man I kind of forgot about Alphas. I like it too, but its definitely not my favorite. Does some really cool stuff with character development that a lot of shows miss out on. Warehouse 13 does that too. Thats actually what I like about SyFy channel is they manage to do characters so well. Everybody feels so human in most of their shows.

OT: Well SciFi sort of breaks itself into two subgenres. Their is the super campy stuff and the more serious stuff. So anyway here it goes (as a list)

All Time Campy: Stargate SG-1 (It is pretty goofy as someone has already said)
Current/All Time Serious: Fringe

Not exactly. I don't know what channels you got, but there was a significant overlap between Deep Space Nine and Voyager for about four years. Sadly you watched the poor end of the spectrum.

Before UPN launched and Voyager came around, a lot of us didn't have access to first run Trek. Since it aired in syndication and in a time with a lot less TV coverage, there were a lot of us (especially in smaller communities) who didn't get the shows at all.

If my dad didn't have so many TOS tapes, I probably would count Voyager as my first trek as a result.
