I've only played the demo, but regardless, I'd say The Witcher.
I really never got the fascination with this game. To me it seemed really average, can you explain what's so good about it?
I think it's probably the fact that you could jump into bed with every hot girl you meet, within around 2 dialogue tree's.....

Oh, and it's like WoW, but offline.

Personally found it lacking......

I can't pick a single favorite, but it would have to be drawn from among:
X-COM UFO Defense
TIE Fighter
Civilization IV

For me it has to Half Life 2 Episode 2 or Fallout 2.
Also we can never ever forget NWN 1. And it's expansions. Those WERE the good old days :p

Seconded, if it hasn't been already. I'm on my fifth play through of this game, mostly because I want to finally have a game where I did absolutely everything and I can finally stop playing it

For me... its incredibly difficult to say, I suppose it depends on what I feel like playing at the time, sometimes its Oblivion, sometimes its some new Russian Shooter I've stumbled upon with the help of a friend.
I really like the combat system, for one. It's unique and fun, balancing player skill and stat-based dice rolling almost perfectly. Second, I like the setting. It's an interesting and original take on the fantasy genre, with a lot more subtext and maturity than you'd normally expect from an RPG. I like the touches of realism, too. Little things, like Geralt only being able to carry as many weapons as he has sheaths for, or actually performing the action of drinking/eating/sharpening, etc. when you use an item. It just makes for a more immersive experience.

Though I will admit, the dialogue is pretty stilted (though that may have been because the demo is for the regular edition) and a lot of the women jump into bed with you at the drop of a hat.
I'll give you the immersion, that's what kept me interested as long as it did, the combat did ruin it for me though, from what I understood when playing you had 3 stances, each enemy could only be hurt by one stance, and the way you'd attack is simply clicking whenever the mouse curser would go white or something. It looked pretty ridiculous to me too.

There's a bit more to it than that. Most enemies can be harmed by all styles, but there's usually one that's most effective. Enemies will always try to surround you, so you have to take your position into account, rolling and dodging to avoid being circled. A truly skilled player can get through a battle and only take a few hits, if any.

A while ago I saw a really good video to prove this point, in which the player was ambushed by a large group of bandits> Unfortunately, it's nowhere to be found.

Probably a tie between Commander Keen, and Portal. I'd probably have to say Portal though, despite the fact that I love Keen.

Half Life is a close third, though.

Depends what criteria.
If you were looking at the story then I'd say Jade Empire (just to balance it out I'll say Portal falls hideously short in this area)
Gameplay - just for the innovation of its one and only mechanic I'd have to say Portal
Writing - Portal is a strong contender again
Difficulty - Starcraft. Gentle difficulty curve going from where your only goal is to build 10 marines to where you're attacked on all sides by three whole armies. Edit - any Blizzard game bar war3 (fuck you Under the Burning Sky, fuck you).

XCOM, although I knew if first as UFO: Enemy Unknown. It still just edges out Jagged Alliance 2 for no particular reason.

Morrowind has given me more hours of fun than any other game. Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn take 2nd and 3rd place in my heart.

i can agree its the best short termed almost flash game ever made...but i would not put it in my top 10 games, the thing is too damn short and there is no depth to the game/environment/etc..

i know its not supposed to, i know it was an add on, and im not blaming valve or the game, im just saying its highly overrated and rationally is not ranked within a top ten single player games as there are soooo many that rank above it in every category

OT: i really can't say..if i had a specific genre maybe, but alot of my friends and myself argue about this kind of crap all the time, because they despise single player rpg's while they drool over starcraft and counter strike... so its all about preference...

my favorite to play? probably kotor, beat the damn game a good 50+ times now..still going strong too. but its nowhere near the best in alot of categories.
