Music, to me, is one of the most important and immersive aspects of a game when executed properly.

I realise that a lot of people find some soundtracks to be arbitrary or in some cases, beyond annoying and would rather mute the music and stick there own preference of music on.
But what about the soundtracks that stick with you?
The ones that you still reminisce or hum in your head to this day?
The ones that still inspire fear or chills up your spine.

A couple of candidates for me include;

Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill series; Something about that guys work just creeps me the hell out but at the same time it draws me in to the point where I actually went and bought the whole collection of soundtracks for some ridiculous amount of money off eBay.
He used a perfect mix of industrial and distorted samples for most situations in the games, especially for the Pyramid Head encounters, hearing those tracks always make me look over my shoulder just to make sure no ones about to swing a 3 metre sword into my torso. The best tune I remember was the part towards the end of Silent Hill 2 *spoiler alert* where Maria is slaughtered by one of the Pyramid Heads and you are forced to do battle with 2 of the remaining Pyramid heads.

Secondly, Chris Vrennas' work on American McGees' Alice; Once again a creepy collection of originality that inspired me to actually purchase the soundtrack, a lot warmer than the sterile cold of Akiras work, but at the same time a gothic chill reminiscent of Danny Elfman in parts running through the string sections whilst also incorporating an archaic industrial feel to the (if it can so be called) percussion work.

Well that's my 2 cents, Those 2 works definitely stuck with me over time and I still enjoy them to this day =]

WOW, here I was thiking:

"Oh man, I gonna be an individual and say Akira Yamaoka and all his works in Silent Hill"

Only to find that the first post beat me too it XD

It's really cool knowing that I'm not the only one on this message board who owns all of the Silent Hill soundtracks (thats right! Even 4! Although I still need to buy Origins, those were also awesome).

But to name a different peice of work, I'd have to say Roar of the Earth. Its the OST for Shadow of the Colossus and it is amazing. Definitely right up there next to Silent Hill in my list.

I haven't played silent hill, but I generally like horror game style music, especially when the music score dynamically increases in intensity along with game play.

I know of one such game in recent times, and that is the pearl that is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. I don't know who was the producer for that games ambient music and atmosphere, but he/she did a damn good job. Moreover, the soundtrack was filled to the brim with liquid awesome:

Half-Life 2, silent most of the time, blood pumpingly intense at times.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3, the perfect fantasy soundtrack.

The Battle music in that game was so top notch, and i really liked some of the songs in the castle screens too.

Necropolis and Fortress come to mind. But the best sound was the "Open treasure chest" sound, amazing.

I enjoyed GTA Vice City's soundtrack. Really helped the mood, and I love Cuban jazz.

Almost every Final Fantasy has been on the leading edge soundtrack-wise. It's becoming less-so now that everyone seems to have an orchestra. But back in the 8 and 16-bit days they put together some sweet tunes (even if it was only a fake orchestra).

Also, although they're not soundtracks in the standard way, Defcon, Morrowind, and the Fallout games all have musical scores that do a LOT to heighten the mood the developers are trying to set.

Anybody remember how good the old C64 game soundtracks could be? Nope? Just me then...

But on a far more up-to-date theme, I did think that games like Oblivion and Bioshock got it absolutely right when it came to their soundtrack.

Bioshock
Half Life 2
Halo
Mass Effect

There is absolutly no way you can argue with that list. You must be either stupid or deaf.

Other then the intro, i can't remember bioshock having any music of note.

Anyway, i'm going to argue with your list just for the sake of it because you said i couldn't.
Silent Hill
Word of Warcraft(the Necropolis Naxxramas background music is composed out of pure liquid awesome)
Portal
Medieval II: Total War
Anything composed by Frank Klepacki

I always seem to be mentioning indie games on these 'Best everest' threads but I'm still listening to the soundtrack for Immortal Defense. You can download it for free here:

The maker's Dad wrote the music and a friend composed it. Sul Astro is a particular favorite of mine.

I agree with mostly all of this.
HL2's techno can pump me up, and the more ominous Ravenholm music.
Nothing made me happier in Bioshock than when I was creeping around, and getting closer to a strange sound until I discovered a jukebox playing "somewhere beyond the sea" (although thats not really soundtrack.)
Army of Two has pretty decent music as well I guess.

Homeworld 2 (fabulous, just fabulous)
Descent 2 (one of the original "redbook audio" soundtracks)
Diablo 2 (two words, harem theme)
Castlevania 4 (Snes)

Supreme Commander (although in my opinion, the original's soundtrack is surpassed by that of Forged Alliance)

I would mention Halo, Rayman 2 and 3, Half life 2, splinter cell 3, zelda series, burnout 3, the longest journey series, silent hill 2 and the ssx (espesially ssx3) series. There are others too that have a few great ones, like oddworld, crash twinsaniity (intro music) and lost odyssey.

My pic for best original soundtrack would be halo, and my pic for best licensed soundtrack and best use of it would be ssx 3.
