...and you would of course be correct. Mind you, you would also have been correct if you had said Jagged Alliance 2, Frozen Synapse, or indeed Laser Squad Nemesis.

Lord of The Rings : Battle For Middle Earth!

It may not be the deepest or most complex game, but the wars of attrition take real skill to win if your playing against the computer or against another high-skilled player. In my case, my brother, who often kicked my ass.

Only the first one though, the second one was no way near as good.

Probably Rome or Medieval II: Total War. I've played Empire but my computer hardly runs it :( I think the Total War games just dominate the whole genre. I mean you have excellent turn based strategy on the campaign map and thyen you go into real time for the battles.

I know I'm going to be pretty much alone in this, but one of my favorite strategy games (though I don't think it's the best) is Civilization Revolution. It wasn't hard to pick up, nor did it have a steep learning curve for getting better at it. While there was more in-depth areas with having to decide between research paths and deciding which route to go down for winning the game, there was also enough right in front of you to make it feel like you were doing something. Though I don't like how the AI is unfair on higher difficulties and I've heard the online is awful.

That's just my opinion though. It's a game I had a lot of fun with.

Company of Heroes, hands down
Easily THQ/Relic's best work, absolutely amazing, and from the plethora of strategy games I have, everything from space strategy (Sins, Homeworld) to turn based (Total War and Civ), along with all the regular RTS titles like C&C, Starcraft, AoE, World in Conflict, Empire Earth, Company of Heroes and it's expansions stood out like a beacon of tactical squad-based brilliance, with epic visuals for it's time that still hold up extremely well today. I whole-heartedly recommend it for any RTS fans.

Installation and patching is a pain in the arse though :p

Homeworld, either one of them. Those games are awesome in everyway. Great storyline, great voice acting, great sound and music, great ghrapics still due to nvidea and loads and loads of freakig awesome mods. Definitly the BEST RTS for me!

Heroes of annihilated empires, very fun (for me at least).
Edit: cuz its fun to spawn special and unique spells on hords of enemies and powerful master monsters.

All good games... but not strategy games. Those are squad tactics games, with various levels of RPG elements.

I'm going to have to go with Starcraft 2 on this one.

The various Total War are awesome but all have some kind of flaw, Age of Empires 2 was by far my favorite game for a long time... but let's be fair, it did not age well, it's not very balanced, and not very...well, strategic, when you get down to it. Later games did no better.

Civ is a strong contender here but I personally didn't like V as much as III or IV and it seems a bit... well, random to me.

SOASE, quick pace, yet slow enough to be able to really be in control
heard a bit about that and it sounds interesting, but I never played it or even seen it. found Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity on steam for 15 bucks. Would you recommend that one? (as opposed to another entry in the series)

Age of Empires 2.

It is just so awesome, although it was not balanced all that well, ESPECIALLY when the expansions came out.

It was not a competitive game. It was alot more about grand strategy, maintaining and skirmishing for resources. It definitely was not the AMP spam, click fest that was SC, because SC was very, very simple, although far less enjoyable in SP IMO.
