I'm talking about games like Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vandal Hearts. What are your favorites and why?

Its chess that levels up. One of my all time Favorites, and the only reason I own a GameCube.

Tactics ogre has a bit place in my heart, and only partially due to nostalgia!
Other than that, FFT and Disgaea are good, but that's about all I've played.

FFT, Disgaea, Tactics Ogre, Vandal Hearts, Devil Survivor... Trying to think of more. Probably one of my favorite genres, but there's so few games in it. The Langrisser series... Super Robot wars... Yeah, I'm going to be watching this thread for games I haven't played.

Oh plenty of fantastic SRPGs to list.

FF Tactics is an obvious answer with it's great depth, massive (albeit broken) class system, and superb story. Although I am only counting the first Tactics game (PS1/PSP), the advance games can go die in a fire...so much hate for them.

Ogre Battle series is up there with FFT and rightly so seeing as they were done by the same person. Let Us Cling Together and Knight of Lodis are exceptionally great games standing side by side with FFT. Great deep stories of politics, faith, and characters that alqays felt rather human save for a new exceptions.

Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars is a pretty unsung gem. Pretty much a visual novel as much as an SRPG it was, but damn was the story good. Had a unique and fun engagement system that rewarded actual skill as much as strategy.

Disgaea series is always fun, quirky, and over the top. Can get pretty hard core and grindy, but I mainly just stick with the mains tory and a bit of the side material, I just can't put myself through the mega hard core leveling stuff and whatnot.

Zetai Hero Project is a nice Disgaea'esqu game made by NIS. A rouge like SRPG that does some weird and entertaining thing like rewarding you for dying...sorta.

Fire Emblem is okay, but I was never that enamored with the series and don't hold it in as high regard as others do. Still good overall.

Never played an Super Robot Wars games, but I'm interested in trying them as they just look positively fun and outrageous.

Jeanne D'arc is another fun SRPG with a neat team based guard mechanic that rewards unit placement and flanking respectively. Very pretty game with endearing character, fun fantasy take on a classic tale, and just a really rock solid game.

And I'll end this list for now with another game that doesn't get much attention, but that because it never made outside of Japan; That game is Bahamut Lagoon. Seriously, get a SNES emulator and download this game (it's okay because like I said, never left japan). Hunt down Tomatoes translated ROM and play it. Awesome game with a kick ass dragon mechanic, environmental spell effects, party based combat mechanics, and pokemon'esqu Drgaon breeding/evolution for you to make the best dragon teams you can. Really great story with a good mix of seriousness and levity to it. I love this game, and if you love SRPGs too you owe it to yourself to play this game.

God dammit Square Enix, remake this game or put it out on virtual console, mobile, whatever. I needs a remake/re-release!!!

Shin Megami Tensei - Devil Survivor and Disgaea are the two that really stand out. Fire Emblem is close to the top on the list of "Games I've never played but would probably really like" so I can't comment on it other than I think it sounds good. FF Tactics is good too, I just never fell as in love with it as I did Disgaea.

I like most of what everyone has said so far, the only thing I have to add is an old school series.

The PSP Tactics Ogre is an enjoyable game, Phantom Brave is hilariously amusing for the first few dozen hours (after which it goes into the typical Nippon Ichi grind, so if that isn't your thing, you've been warned), and Front Mission 3 for Playstation 1 is pretty good. Arc the Lad 1 and 2, also for the Playstation, count as well, if in a slightly unconventional way (Arc the Lad 3 also counts, but that game is... not particularly good in my opinion). There's also Growlanser, but that's kind of a turn-based/real-time hybrid.

Valkyrie Profile on DS is the only one I can think of that hasn't already been said.

The coolest idea in it by far is the ability to supercharge any of your characters for one battle, at the cost of their real actual in-story life.

So awesome. So bleak too.

Fire Emblem. Trust me, it may be difficult, but find a copy of Fire Emblem 7 (that's Fire Emblem on GBA)play it, and try not to have a good time. Think Chess, if you could choose what pieces you want, each of the pieces had their own backstory and personality, and they occasionally talk amongst each other in the middle of battle. What is not to love about that?
