I will second (or possibly sixteenth) the recommendation for Tales of Symphonia, with Tales of the Abyss right behind it.

I'm also going to buck the trend and recommend you give Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World a chance. Personally, I loved it.

Well, let's see... I have played the following:

1) Phantasia
2) Destiny
3) Eternia
4) Symphonia
5) Symphonia: Dawn of the New World

Out of all these, I liked the original Tales of Symphonia the most. I'd love to play Tales of the Abyss, but it wasn't released in Europe.
Do you know where I could buy Symphonia? I've looked on Amazon, ebay and just general internet and I haven't found anything.

Well since Tales of Symphonia is one of my favourite games I'd have to go for that, Phantasia is pretty good too.

Dawn of a New World is...interesting. I started off hating both for the main characters. As it went on though they actually developed into characters I could like and sympathize with. Go for it if you like Symphonia, but be ready for the first sequences that will have you wanting to kill the main characters off. It gets better. Definitely go for Symphonia though. Lots of fun.

For once the majority isn't far off, Symphonia is great , the combat is more 2.5D(not an insult) but it works, just takes some time to get used to. The story is great even if it is a bit cliched.

As for Legendia, If you can find it cheap get it, it's not as bad as people say it is, not the series finest moment but not the worst. It plays more like a 2-D fighter but it works.

The Phantasia remake, isn't horrible but I wouldn't recommend it. I haven't played Abyss but people tell me its great

So in Summary get Symphonia/Abyss first, then Legendia, and finally Phantasia if you really need a tales fix.

Only played the ones on Nintendo consoles (Symphonia and Phantasia) and definately recommend Symphonia, by far one of the best JRPGs I've played. Haven't played Dawn yet but really want to give it a chance.

It would be great... if I still had a GC D: I sold it to my cousin after I realised other than Zelda, Metroid, and the other obvious GC titles there was nothing I wanted to play...god I wish I knew what was a good game back then :[

Tales of the Abyss for its battle system. ToS was pretty good too but avoid ToS: Dawn of the New World. Complete and utter crap.

Edit: Do not touch Tales of Legendia.
You'll spend the first twenty hours of gameplay rescuing your "sister" only for her to go evil on you when you finally do manage to save her.
Dude... spoilers much?
I played a few of the Tales games, so I can't really tell what is the best, but Symphonia was pretty good. Tales of the Abyss was good, but technically flawed, which killed the experience to me. The main issue I had with Tales of Legendia was the massive backtracking it had, and the second half wasn't that good.

I think Tales of Symphonia is the best. The characters are all quirky and endearing without becoming caricatures. The story (while being kind of convoluted near the end) was twisty enough to keep me interested from beginning to end.

There was one thing Symphonia didn't have though: A DOG SMOKING A PIPE!

Well, you could always buy a Wii to play the game (GASP!). Alternatively, you could hunt down the Japanese-only Playstation 2 version. Or wait and/or hope/pray that Namco releases the game as a downloadable title on PSN/Live. Other than that though, the Wii/GC is the only English option available (legally).

But hey, Symphonia's sequel has been released on the Wii, as will Tales of Graces. Just a thought.

i might be the only one but i prefer tales of destiny 2 for the ps1 or maybe the original tales of destiny, i dont know why but the other ones that i have tried didnt have the lasting appeal that made me want to play through the whole game like the original 2 did.

I found that similarly in tri-ace's Infinite Undiscovery, where the main charachter, Capell, is a appologetic pussy-ass wet blanket :p but throughout the story he develops into an interesting (and pretty bad-ass) charachter.

kind of off topic but what the hey :D

I agree on Capell's development. From the midway point he really mans up. But I did like him from the beginning. Gotta love a guy who gets lost in thought when a girl says she'll do anything for him :p
