Well, sliced bread obviously implies a certain degree of sophistication in the world. One would first have to collect in groups before grain could be farmed. Even then, while bread was almost certainly one of the first things people made when civilization became a thing, I could only assume that a careful slice was not the first way devised of partitioning it among a group (probably ripping or tearing). If I assume that the slicing is important because it allowed for greater precsion in the parceling which inevitably lead to the sandwich, I would be willing to wager that the loaf of bread itself was the best thing before slided bread.

Best thing since hot buttered toasted crumpets.

The crumpet is an amazing invention but I would like to put forward the argument for the biscuit. Biscuits are wonderful, they are comforting and simple at the same time. You can have a plain digestive, a chocolate biscuit or even something fancy like a jammy biscuit. You can even get savoury biscuits to have with cheese and so on.

There is nothing more English than a cup of tea and a nice biscuit to dunk.

They were clearly the best thing before sliced bread

Bread was the best thing before sliced bread. After the discovery of slicing, bread enjoyed an increased popularity due to the rise of condiments, the invention of the sandwich and the decreased need to just take a giant damn bite right outta the loaf (the common practice at the time).

This information is 100% factual and is no way completely made out of whole cloth. Hmmm, maybe whole cloth was the best thing before sliced bread...
