You can't stockpile enough food. You need seeds and firearms/bows+arrows. That's the only way to get enough food.

Bullets. Lots and lots of bullets. Forget 'my' food, I'm coming for yours.

Off-topic: Those freaking captchas REALLY irritate the hell out of me.

People.
There's going to be a lot of those running around and best of all, they'll be fresh. Plus human flesh keeps really well and is a very versatile meat that can be used in just about anything.
At least that's what this guy:

Told me and he looks like he knows what he's talking about.

MRE's, vitamin supplements, various canned goods. Also Twinkies and Oreos. I shit you not I ate an Oreo from 1977 and it tasted fine. Granted it probably gave me four types of cancer.

Or you can just eat people... mmmm... people... *salivating*

EDIT - Oh yeah Water's kinda essential too... more essential than shelter or food.

Guns and ammo. I'll steal what I need from survivors. Or give myself a quick death.

But if I must. MRE's, they suck but you'll eat about anything in the apocalypse.

Anything dehydrated will last a very, very long time. As it has no water in it.

A good choice would be vegetables. In anything but a nuclear apocalypse you would be able to find meat. Maybe not beef...but you'd be able to find meat. But do you know where to find vegetables growing naturally? Grains and roots would be easy enough, but other stuff is kinda scarce unless you happen to be living on a farm. Also a good idea to have a stockpile of good grains. You can eat, you can plant, and you can make alcohol. God forbid you go through an apocalypse without alcohol!

Although on a serious note, alcohol would be necessary for sterilization purposes, and for drinking; chances are the water you'd be getting after an apocalypse would make you sick. That's a problem with living in a first world country, we can't drink untreated water without getting sick.

Mormons. This isn't as strange as it sounds. Mormons belive that the end of the world will happen in they're lifetime and so they keep food stock piles in there house to keep them feed during the last days when civilization is falling apart.

So i'd stock up on Mormons.

Ration packs... As said before! You can eat them hot or cold, and they don't have use by dates! (All of my issue ones only had a 'made-on' date! Some were from the 80's!) Lots of different meals, some tins of pate/packets of tuna mayo, and some bicuit browns and biscuit fruits! (Like the cross between digestives and crackers, but are there to have the pate on!) Oh, and dont forget the Chocolate, and the teas/coffees/hot chocolate/vegitable stock/screech (lemon drink powder)! All the things! And the miniscule bottle of tabasco...

The thing to note with Ration packs is they are discusting until you actually have to have them... after a miserable couple of days in the field they are a god-send! And tast amazing... but in the real world they just suck!

That is one of the most vile things I have ever seen.

On Topic: SPAM, Soup and beans, assuming you have something that can heat up the latter two.

Anything in cans, really.

If stockpiling water is an option, dehydrated foodstuffs is probably best... but only if oxygen supply doesn't put limitations on boiling some water. Can't imagine munching on crunchy dry dehydrated stuff will be much fun or much use. I'd expect raw Ramen or similar to mummify and kill you within a week or so.

Otherwise, it would have to be cans... plenty of cans.

I'd also suggest having a stable stock of cockroaches around, to get rid of leftover food and prevent other, less controllable species from invading your hole-in-the-ground home. If kept properly, cockroaches can easily be considered food themselves. Raw for the mild neurotoxic zing that will keep you form going mental, cooked or grilled for extra crunch and taste.

From the looks of it, those little critters can even turn wood and other odd stuff into cockroach meat even we can easily digest. I still prefer chicken and bacon, but it's highly improbable those could be kept alive in the bunker for long.
