Fallout 3 style because half of the fun comes from exploring. I mean, I loved inFamous and had a lot of fun with Saints Row 2, it's just that those feel more like an excuse to cause destruction and run around blowing things up. Everyone had a different experience in Fallout 3. I could talk about a ruined building I found with a working terminal and creepy messages on it that my friend never found and my friend could talk to me about a room with plungers on the walls that I never found. The deepest it gets in other types are "so I went here to blow everything up and then I went there to blow other things up."
Haha...are you talking about the Dunwich Building? And if so, how weird is it that I thought of it instantly?
ahhh! Don't mention that name I almost broke down in tears of fear...

Seriously hat building is freaky...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. definately, probably the only game where absolutely everything is changing around you all the time.

A game that lets me play it the way I want to
Not a forced "walk here choose to be good/gray/evil" fight, get a plot clue walk to next point

Fallout 3 style. There's just so much shit in it, it's amazing.
Strangely I felt that Fallout 3 hardly had anything in it when compared to Oblivion.

And I do the prefer the Oblivion style sandbox, where almost every location (city, landmark) you find has things you can do.

Example: There are dozens of locations (Ayleid ruins, caves, forts) to discover and crawl through. Yes they may be samey, but when there's so many you can't help crawling through as many as you can just to see what kind of rare, enchanted loot you'll find. Also all the cities feel like their own settlements, almost like actual provinces.

Fallout 3 failed hard in this. Despite being a few settlements and buildings, most of the locations were just open sites with some enemies crawling around. Also the cities were not as expansive as Oblivion, although I can't really hold it against the game due to it's setting (post-apocalypse).

Finally another example of failure in this aspect: Prototype. Despite it being a giant city and being able to fly all over, almost every square mile of it seemed literally copy-pasted, especially the military bases. Seriously guys, what's the point of having so many bases if they are all exactly the same?

I like Rockstar's sandboxes that aren't GTA: like Bully and Red Dead Redemption.

I also liked Infamous.

The only correct answer is Scribblenauts. You can actually make a literal sandbox. And then put the Kraken in it. That's real freedom.

None of the above. I prefer the Mafia/GTA/Mercenaries/Saboteur/Just Cause/Driver 1 sandboxes.

I'm not interested unless there's civilisation, at least some grounding in reality, a living thriving world (which leaves you out on the street, Fallout, and I'm extremely disappointed in your wasted potential, Bioshock). It better have guns, it better have cars. Bonus if it has aerial vehicles too.

Though I'll give Minecraft and Assassin's Creed 2 a pass because they do what the do very well indeed. And if anyone made a Robin Hood Sandbox game that played like the Atari game from 1991 I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

Oblivion has a huge world that you can literally live in...so that, but with some New Vegas elements to it..I love being able to actually have a non-violent playthrough and have it work. SO yeah a game like Oblivion but you don't have to fight if you don't want to, you can be a doctor or a scientist with loads of charisma and talk yourway out of everything in a Phoenix Wright type battle if neccessary, would be an amazing game for me :D

I prefer the Morrowind/Oblivion style.

The atmosphere in Fallout is too oppressive for me to want to look at it for too long at a time. I love Fallout 3, don't get me wrong, but I can't get lost in it. It's a dreary world.

Also, I don't really consider Morrowind or Oblivion sandbox games. Sandbox games, to me, are things like Minecraft (where you quite literally feel like you're playing in a sandbox, building structures and playing pretend to your heart's content) or like GTA and Just Cause (where the world is huge and open, but there are no consequences to your actions, hence the feeling that you ARE playing in a sandbox.)

Of all time GTA SA for PC. The ability to mod and add custom soundtracks is the reason why its still on my computer even though I haven't played it in a while.
That's probably the most modded game on my PC; yes, it's still on mine too.
That is probably my favorite sandbox game. I sometimes just like to put on Master Sounds and drive around the desert. R* seems to have gone downhill this generation. GTA4 and the expansions combined didn't have nearly as much space, things to do, rewards, and continued play. Once you're done with the story, you're kind of done with the game.
I dig Fallout 3 (and to a lesser extent New Vegas) because of the detail of the environments and the many different random events that happen to you in those blank spaces in between locations. It made the world seem very organic and real. New Vegas seems to have a more cluttered map with hardly any of these different random events. Actually, I hardly ever even get attacked by raiders and stuff. I like what they did with the companions and mission structure (I might have more playthroughs of this game) but overall, It's not as compelling as Fallout 3.

So I guess I like an unpredictable and detailed sandbox with lots of different things to do, reasons to explore (I like finding unique guns and armor), and optional gameplay. If a sandbox is compelling, I can play it for months and that makes it easier to justify the $60 price tag.

Oh, and good radio stations. I dig radio new vegas (Wayne's awesome, I just wish they included a couple of his tunes) but it keeps playing the same 4 songs over and over again.

GTA series is good.
But this gen I'd say Prototype for the over the top moves and smooth platforming.
Since GTA IV had to go the "realistic" route and ruin the game I'd say Saints Row 2 is runner up.

I'm a big fan of both Infamous and Saints Row 2. Semi realistic landscape, with enough nonsense to be a ton of fun.
