Not that you guys need the images, but what is your favourite version of these weapons? What game are they from and what is it called?

For generic SMG, the SMG in Half Life 2. Fuck the Gravity Gun...I had the SMG!

For generic pistol, the one in Halo: Reach (which is basically the one from Halo 1).

For generic sniper, the Fareye from Resistance. No fancy bullets, just a handy time slowing mechanic.

For generic shotgun, the Doom shotgun. Not the Super Shotgun, the basic one.

For generic assault rifle, the Blaster (Yellow gun base form) from Jak 2/3.

Here is my list.

Pistol: Halo one's pistol. (can counter snipers and take out tanks)
SMG: The one from Shadowrun (extremely effective and pretty accurate)
Shotgun: Half-Life 2's (I just love the sound it makes)
Assault Rifle: The SCAR from MW2 (I just love that gun)
Sniper Rifle: Halo: Reach's (Its the only sniper I can kill with)

I'm giving myself a rule of no more than one weapon from any given series, so without further delay, here they are.

Pistol:
The Magnum revolver in Resident Evil and it's remake have to take the cake for this, it's a huge ass revolver that obliterates the heads of anything in it's immediate vacinity with one bullet.

SMG:
My favourite SMG in a game has to be the MP5 look-a-like in Red Faction mainly because a) it looked cool and b) you could use assault rifle ammo and pistol bullets with it, in other words, you had the gun for all occasions and would almost never find yourself running out of ammo for it.

Shotgun:
The Shredder from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil should need no introduction, it was easily the best weapon in the game and was found pretty early on. For the uninitiated, it was a semi-auto shotty that fire high-damage lasers that exploded into lots of smaller shots (that also bounced around) or would have one, high strength shot that would one-shot most enemies in the game (my favourite).

This gun may have been what started my love affair with shotties in games.

Assault Rifle:
This is a tie between pulse rifle from any Alien game and the Boltgun from Warhammer 40,000.

The pulse rifle is accurate, has a high rate of fire, does a lot of damage and has an underslung grenade launcher to boot (and you almost always are given one from the word go and have plenty of ammo).

The Boltgun is basically a cross between a rocket launcher and a machine gun, need I say more?

Sniper Rifle:
I've never really liked sniping in games but I did have a really good time going through MGS3 using the SVD to pick off oblivious guards as I stalk my way through the jungles and mountains, causing panic and commotion amongst them while I fade back into foliage.

I miss that game.

HMG:
Back mounted chainguns from any Armoured Core game are met with a mixture of joy and dread (joy if you're using them and dread if the other fellow has them), all you need is a couple of these and any enemy will be reduced to rubble in a matter of seconds so long as you remember to hold the trigger down (many a battle has been won just because I had more bullets than the other guy).

In short, my main stratagy is along the lines of 'DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA'.
