Squall and Quistis from FFVIII (Don't get me wrong, I like Rinoa, but Quistis and Squall made a far better couple).
Nominees: Sonic the Hedgehog, E-102 Gamma (Sonic Adventure), Amy Rose (her dialogue with Gamma was brilliant), Vivi (FFIX), Tifa and Aerith (FFVII), Jade (Beyond Good and Evil), Rayman, and Zelda (we only get to play as her in one game, it was a CD-i game, and that's the biggest tragedy of them all).

I'm with you there; the last good characters Sonic Team created more or less ended with Sonic Adventure. It was good to see Amy as a true playable character (after much teasing in the previous games) and E-102 Gamma is probably one of the deepest robotic characters in the history of gaming (Tikal was kind of cute, too). After that, I think you're right that every new character just serves to make the Big Blue Blur look better.ColdStorage said:

Albedo (Xenosaga).
I have to give nods to Kefka (FFVI), Sonic (he's the title), and Sephiroth (FFVII), but Kefka's evil, Sephiroth's unadultered awesome, and Sonic's...uh...I dunno why he's so great, to be honest...they're all dwarfed by Albedo. There has never been a villain as cool as he, nor will there ever be another. Not to mention that player characters everywhere pale in comparison to villains, period (with very few notable exceptions).

Oooh ooh! I also REALLY like Tidus and Auron from final fantasy X, and i also totally think Fayte (was that his name?) from star ocean till the end of time should be up here

But along with Phoenix I have to say Samus. Because, well, she's bada$$. Like the definition there of. Like if you looked it up in the dictionary there would just be an enormous picture of Samus with an arrow pointing to it. And, in playing Metroid and thus being Samus, you too get to be a complete badass.
