Bioshock. Hands-down, Bioshock. You're shown a not-too-distant past in which it was cool to smoke on airplanes. You swim to safety in the middle of the...Atlantic(?) ocean. You take a mysterious elevator into the heart of the sea and ride a self-propelled public transit vehicle into an underwater city which doesn't look nearly as haunted and screwed over as it is.

"They said it would be impossible to build Rapture under the sea. I said it would be impossible to build it anywhere else."
I agree.

Plus, I love how the music is timed with what's going on. Like, how the music gradually builds as it pans up the rock, and kinda explodes when the city is fully shown, followed by the sudden sound which is timed with the squid's movement. It goes on for the entire sequence, it's fucking dope.

One of my favorites in gaming. Kick-ass intro accompanied with a great speech. Perfect way to start a game.

I don't really care what people think about the song, but the visuals, lyrics and music for the Street Fighter 4 intro make it the best in my eyes.

Killzone 2, why? Because of the speech. Sends chills down my spine every time I watch it.

The original Mechwarrior 2 intro still makes me happy as well! Keep in mind this video is.. holy shit, over 15 years old now.

half life 2 is just so epic. just g-man talking in his haunting voice. and just walking off the train and getting a feel for your surroundings is great.
left 4 dead and l4d2 both had good openings, though l4d was the best. prototype had a neat opening as well, along with borderlands.

Borderlands did have a great opening. Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, baby. Still, it was annoying that you couldn't skip the monologue at the beginning...

Fallout 3's was pretty good as well.

I think I'd have to give it to Mass Effect 2 though. It starts you in an exploding ship and kills you three minutes later. The mark of a game that doesn't screw around.

Gears of war 2's

Dead Space also gets an honorable mention
Really, becuase I didn't think Dead Space was all that good. I mean, the whole game was just so boring after the first few scares, and I didn't find the voice acting all that great.

I don't really feel like entering code but there are two intros that always hype me up, the Rome Total War intro movie always got me excited the music in that game is epic and was applied well in the intro. The intro to the Undead campaign in Warcraft 3 in which Arthas kills his father was another, again mostly for the background music.

Dead Space definitely blew my mind (especially since I'd just upgraded my graphics card)

Meanwhile, although it isn't an opening, the extended Starcraft 2 tv spot reminded me why I loved the game so much.
