I recently watched Letters From Iwo Jima which was great. Is there any more great war/military films? I've seen Black Hawk down and Saving Private Ryan. What about Enemy at the gates?

Enemy at the Gates is a little bit unrealistic and tries to convey winning a war with only one person.

My favorite was Black Hawk Down, because it had that strong message of your fellow man before yourself.

Enemy at the gates was a good film, but not really a good war film IMO. The Longest Day remains my favorite.

Oh. You have to pick up The HBO Mini Series "Generation Kill" It's about the war in Iraq. I loved it. It's a Good Choice.

Enemy at the Gates was pretty good. Sure, it felt like one guy was making all the difference, but really, you don't get 500 kills and not make a dent in the enemy.

Also, check out Taegukgi. Give the Koreans some love.

Enemy at the gates is pretty poor to be honest. Have you seen Apocalypse now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter or The Thin Red Line?

Then there are classics such as Catch-22!

If you haven't seen it, you should buy/rent/download Platoon. Platoon packs a pretty hefty emotional punch (or at least I think it does) and does a good job of not glorifying the violence and avoiding making either side look 'good' or 'bad'. Both the Vietcong and the Americans get pretty brutal and cruel towards their enemies.
I don't remember much about Enemy at the Gates, it's been years since I've watched it and it wasn't something I really felt like re-watching, so I can't be of much help there.
Though I will say that I own copies of Brave Heart, Black Hawk Down and Platoon and I re-watch them from time to time.

I really enjoy WWII films, like Schindler's List, Downfall and The Counterfeiters. But then there are films like Gone With the Wind and Pan's Labyrinth which may not be 'War films' but the war (Civil War, WWII in fascist Spain) weighs heavily on the plots.

I love Vietnam war films too like Full Metal Jacket and Platoon

I actually cried during Platoon, bloody Barber's Adagio for strings, and Sgt. Elias
It features a really young Johnny Depp :)

You need to see Platoon. Apart from one slightly silly bit it's excellent all the way through, it's also partly based on Oliver Stone's actualy experience in Vietnam, although which bits really happened he always refused to be drawn on.

Other stuff to see, Ice Cold in Alex, The Cross of Iron, The Longest Day and although not movies, Band of Brothers, The Pacific and The World at War need to be watched.

Although the best war movie recently is Saving Private Ryan. It's only minor hiccup is that all soldiers of nations other than America and Germany are apparently invisible, but that's fairly minor.

It's a bit meh. Not a bad film, but hardly genre defining.

I've seen only Saving Private Ryan so far.
It's a very, very good movie, I heavily recommend it.
