Definitely The Big Red One, my absolute favorite. Be sure to watch The Restoration edition if you decide to try it.

Either 'Bridge over the River Kwai' or 'The Great Escape'. American war films always seem a bit too pretentious to me.

Enemy at the Gates is a little bit unrealistic and tries to convey winning a war with only one person.

My favorite was Black Hawk Down, because it had that strong message of your fellow man before yourself.
In the great word of the awesome Eric Bana "Yeh can't choose who gets shot and who doesn't, ish Jish war."

OT: Band of Brothers. It's not a movie, but each episode is the length of one, so essentially you get 10 excellently written and acted movies chronicaling the war lives of the men of Easy Company. ^^

Another good war film is Full Metal Jacket, or better know as "You'll only remember the first half of this film". XD

Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now (Redux) are probably the ones I most remember. Saving Private Ryan is probably the most "classical" war film (in terms of story structure and general message) I can un-ironically recommend, although Enemy at the Gates is an interesting if not fantastic film which features some cool sniping action.

I've been meaning to finish Black Hawk Down but I always get sidetracked.

I'd also like to add that anybody who saw Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now and didn't recommend it here... Has vastly different tastes than me.

What, you were expecting an obnoxious, elitist statement about how my opinion is the best? What did you think this place was, a forum for snobs who think they're smarter than they are or something? Oh, wait.

lol It makes me laugh every time I see it, even tho it's the most serious movie ever. it's not that bad tho, he does a decent job of an american accent the rest of the time.

My all time favorite war movies are(in order): Apocolypse Now, Full Metal Jacker, Saving Private Ryan,The Bridge on the River Kwai, Black Hawk Down, Platoon, Schindler's List, The Thin Red Line, Letters from Iwo Jima, All Quite on the Western Front, Flags of our Fathers, Band of Brothers (the one were Spears charges Foy was my favorite), The Longest Day, Enemy At the Gates, Hamburger Hill. Also thougth A Bridge too Far was a good film. Braveheart was good if it counts as a war movie.(Not sure why but I consider only movies based on WWI+ that are real wars war movies). Also the Hurt Locker was good. Pacific was not even half as good as Band of Brothers in my opinion. The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heros were also good. Not sure why but I always loved Flyboys and Where Eagles Dare. Starship Troopers was good but I don't consider it a "War Movie".(Not a real war). Zulu had a good plot but is a little outdated.(They need to remake it).

I'll be back later with a proper list. Till then, Go and watch Apocalypse Now, but NOT the redux version.
