The anti-material rifle is so effective that it almost feels like cheating.

It even pays for it self in no time if you load up on explosive rounds and piss off one of the main factions. Simply throw a couple rounds in the direction of a hunting party and loot the corpses. Coupled with a high repair skill, I had so much money after a few hours that I didn't know what to do with it all.

We got this far into a Fallout NV thread and someone just now mentions the M1 Garand? I loved the hell out of that gun.

Sure there was the alien pistol with it's insane crits and anti-material rifle, even the lazer chain guns / Mercy (Auto-Grenade Launcher guarded by a Legendary Deathclaw at that) Well This Machine Kills Commies is the best.

If you have GRA installed, the Medicine Stick. If you're playing a cowboy type character, accept no substitutes.

This Machine isn't DLC, you just need to complete a NCR quest correctly for it
You don't have to complete it a certain way, Boyd or Careras (something like that) will give it to you depending on who's side you take.

There's a non-unique version in GRA

In the base game, there are a few notable weapons. The gauss rifle is easily the equal of the anti-material rifle for energy weapon users and it has a significantly easier strength requirement. It does come with a catch in that a significant amount of its damage is seemingly ignored if you use it within vats. The anti-material rifle is also a solid choice. Both weapons have fairly damning flaws. Both have relatively expensive and weighty ammunition that is difficult to come by even if you make it yourself. In hardcore mode, the sheer bulk of the weapons and ammunition leaves little room for other objects of value.

Personally, my favorite weapon was from an otherwise dull piece of DLC: The Light Shining in the Darknesss. You get a significant critical hit bonus, the ammunition is cheap to acquire and easy to make, the weapon itself does a significant amount of damage and it has such a low AP cost that I was able to fire something on the order of ten rounds in a single VATS cycle. It was the ultimate combination of high single target damage, rate of fire and critical hit bonus potential. Hell, if you built your character right the weapons six round magazine could generate two to three crits.

Yes the battle rifle, but why would you want that when you can get This Machine (kills commies).

Just easier to get if you ABSOLUTELY need it. GRA is a great DLC. Retroactively makes other weapons amazing.

Damn, I really feel like playing NV again :D

Yeah, defintely gonna reroll my foxy wasteland samurai. It's always so satisfying to wipe out the Legion with a female character.

'Weakest gender' my arse :D

Mine was always The Gobi Campaign scout rifle. Heads fly across the screen like tattered newspaper from 1000 yards away.

My prefered set-up is the Hunting Rifle as the main weapon. It's fairly accurate, looks lovely and does a good bit of damage. Ammunition is a bit scarce, but it doesn't really eat up the rounds that fast.
Now, my favorite gun of all is the Maria, it looks fantastic and works very well as a sidearm. Damage might not always be spectacular, but I tend to gather alot of 9mm for it, so I can always just keep a lot of lead going. Also, I can switch for the different ammo types when I want to feel clever rather quickly.

And there's the humble machete. It doesn't look very spectacular. But it chops off bits from nasties, and is a reliable last resort.

Come to think of it, my character is pretty much Sniper from Team Fortress 2. I just need to find the proper hat.

Alright, replayin' New Vegas. I've got to see it through properly.

Silenced Brotherhood of Steel Sniper Rifle from Old World Blues or the special-edition Gause Rifle.

The fire axe. Hasn't been mentioned here as far as I can tell but it's underrated I think. Maybe because it doesn't seem like anything special, but it's a real ass-saver I tell you whut.

For pistols "That gun" is pretty good but I mostly use energy weapons so I lean towards the YCS/186 Gauss rifle. Also for melee the "Oh, Baby!" is good. Also on the not of NV can anyone tell me if the DLC is worth it? Also how big is the file because it takes a while to Download stuff at my house?
Dead Money is rubbish. It's very hard, very tedious, doesn't give you any notable loot, and the story just isn't that interesting. DO NOT BUY.

Honest Hearts is great! A Light Shining in Darkness quickly became my favorite weapon in the game, constantly getting poisoned became a bit of a hassle though (but maybe that's just because I didn't spec into survival at all). Overall very good, I'd definitely recommend it!

Old World Blues is one of the single greatest gaming experiences I have ever had. Literally the funniest thing I have ever taken part in. The loot was also very good. Could not recommend this add on more!

The Lonesome Road is also fantastic! A very fun, tough, yet accessible challenge. Ulysses is one of my favorite characters in the game, and the loot you get is absolutely phenomenal! The story is quite epic, a standalone game could have easily been made out of it if they had stretched it out. Like Old World Blues, this one is definitely a must buy.

tl;dr: Don't waste your money on Dead Money, Honest Hearts is good but you can live without it, but do not under any circumstances pass up Old World Blues or The Lonesome Road.

My current loadout is:

- A Light Shining In The Darkness (best handgun in game IMHO).
- Q-35 Matter Modulator for when I want to leave little green puddles everywhere.
- Marksman Carbine for long range stuff. Not as powerful as a Sniper but makes up for it with rate of fire.
- Riot Shotgun (or as I like to call it, the Vault Broom).
- Sonic Emitter: Tarantula for dealing with robots.
- Annabelle. Because big explosions are fun.
- Oh, Baby! for twatting things over the head. The big power axe thing from Big Mt. is good fun too.
- Elijah's Advanced LAER, one of the coolest looking weapons in the game.

My Courier is also wearing Joshua Graham's Armour, Daniel's Hat and Doctor Mobius' Glasses.

Maria was my handgun of choice before Honest Hearts, and I would use the Alien Blaster in place of the Sonic Emitter or Advanced LAER prior to Old World Blues. I know the Blaster packs a bigger punch but the OWB weapons are still pretty powerful and ammo is more plentiful. The Sonic Emitter's extra crit and damage against robots is fucking awesome too.

Are you talking about the regular Fire Axe, or Knock-Knock [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Knock-Knock]? Knock-Knock is quite fun. Though getting it might give you a heart attack.
