One of the best webcomics ever that sadly ended after a while was Inside The Gamer's Studio. Here is an example:

Well these are close enough to the top and no has mentioned them so far so the Order of the Stick, Girl Genius and Questionable Content ohh and I suppose Devil's Panties (not satanic porn)

hehe, "Curse you foul daystar!"

I beg to differ; I mentioned Girl Genius. But like QC, it can't get enough publicity, it's so darn good.

My favorite is Axis Powers Hetalia.

It's done by a Japanese guy that lives in New York but it's about--basically, taking World War Two and using anthropomorphic characters to represent each country. It's controversial, uses a lot of stereotypes but--totally hilarious because he does other parts of history too--not just World War II. Good stuff--and, you learn something.

I'll revive this thread so we don't get more asking the same question. My favorites:
Dr. McNinja--You can't get much more hardcore than an Irish ninja with a medical degree who fights, among other things, paleontologist banditos riding velociraptors and a robot clone of Dracula. Definitely worth a read.
Sam and Fuzzy--A great story about a taxi driver and his mildly psychotic, bow-tied talking bear-creature. Also contains ninjas. And heavy metal bands. General awesomeness though it's slightly obscure.
xkcd--Some of the jokes I find a little abstruse, but quite hilarious overall. It conveys so much with those stick figures.
The Meek--an adventure story that started very recently, but looks like it will only get more awesome as it develops. Definitely check it out, but slightly NSFW, as boobs are involved.

I also enjoy Order of the Stick and Questionable Content (and even Penny Arcade at times) But the ones above are the best.

OOTS, Looking for Group and Goblins...

Also, although I have not found any on the web, Jhonen Vasquez's comics (johnny the homicidal maniac, fillerbunny and more) are well worth it. (he made invader zim...).

Thx for the list of new comics, all.

Of the ones still running and regularly updated, I like:
- Dead Winter [http://www.deadwinter.cc]
- ErfWorld [http://www.erfworld.com]
- Gunnerkrigg Court [http://www.gunnerkrigg.com]
- Gunshow [http://gunshowcomic.com]
- Three Panel Soul [http://www.threepanelsoul.com/]
- The Non-Adventures of Wonderella [http://nonadventures.com/]

And while I'm not a huge fan of the comic, I have a lot of respect for the Penny Arcade [http://www.penny-arcade.com/] guys. Often shamelessly ripped off by talentless hacks *coughtimbuckleycough* but never even close to being surpassed, these guys are pretty much the superstars of the webcomic world.

Scary Go Round, it was lovely. Its gone now but Bad Machinery has taken it's place.

(Oots, QC, and xkcd are my favorites as well, but they are already well represented here.)

Humm well then.
MS Paint Adventures is the best thing ever in terms of pure awesomeness.
Sluggy Freelance has the best story of anything on the internet.
Cyanide & Happiness is funny.
Pictures for Sad Children is just great. Somehow.
Oh and also Goats, because WHAT?!

That's awesome; I can't believe I'd never seen that before. It's so much better without that damned annoying cat.

...anyway, my picks would be xkcd, Questionable Content, Gone With the Blastwave, and I've recently got into PhD Comics (as someone now working in scientific research I find I can really relate to it).
