I liked VV from Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, because she was forced to adopt a "Sexy" persona, but remains a nice, if damaged person underneath.
I kind of agree there, but to be honest my choice remains the same as always. April Ryan.

She's sexy, incredibly so, but not in a sexualised way, and she's one of the most resourceful and intelligent female characters I've ever had the pleasure of seeing in a video game. She has to be, she canonically solved that damn rubber duck puzzle at the Metro platform...

I'm just gonna chalk it up to people wearing their rose-colored glasses today.
We're talking about good writing in games specifically here. If we were to narrow the scope to games and characters with writing comparable to that of renowned films and books we wouldn't really have many options to pick from.
Maybe so, but I'm still disappointed that I'm the first person to mention Alyx Vance. It was depressing to see people default to Final Fantasy characters when far better options exist.

On the OP's request any character voiced by Claudia Black, hiring her almost feels like cheating, that voice oozes character, intelligence and sex appeal.
Yes, yes, and OH GOD, YES.

Jennifer Hale, I'm sorry, but Claudia Black has you beat. I could listen to her speak all day.

In fact, I'm going to go do just that. I've been meaning to watch Farscape again.

I'd agree most Final Fantasy characters are one-dimensional cry babies, but there are a few out there that stand out. Final Fantasy IX had really well written characters across the board, though it doesn't get talked about nearly as much as VII, X, etc.

I'm sorry but I've always been creeped out by the idea of "sexy video games". Even the best rendered characters today come off as cartoonish, and even if they overcome that hurdle... I guess today with voice actors and motion capture there can be little difference between a video game character and an actor/actress, but I have a hard time getting past the idea that this "person" is an artificial construct and not real.

I don't really watch movies just because I think "person A" is hot. And when I do it's in private with the intention of getting off. Sure I watch plenty of porn too, but I like porn that is just sex, no story, no acting (even the screams and moans can easily be overdone).

Nope sorry... I spent a good 5 minutes sitting here trying to think of a truly sexy male character. Maybe I don't play enough games. Maybe there is one out there that I haven't found. And maybe there aren't enough male characters out there meant to appeal to gay men.

Surprised by the amount of Mass Effect characters being mentioned. Don't get me wrong, they're fun characters, but they're basically written as girlfriend material. They've got more openings than a strainer. If you couldn't get into their pants I doubt they'd be as liked as they are. With one particular character being so well liked that just to appease the raging blue balls of the fanbase, Bioware made her fuckable eventhough it makes absolutely no sense.

OT: I honestly can't really think of any, except maybe for Chloe Fraser in Uncharted 2, though I think that has more to do with the performance rather than the actual writing, and Maria in Silent Hill 2, except that that I never found her in anyway sexy since anything related to Silent Hill is, like, the biggest boner killer.

Though I can't think of many well written sexy characters in other media either.

Do people really think Alyx Vance is sexy? I mean, she is as well written as you could expect an girlfriend insert in a FPS to be, but sexy? I see significantly sexier women every single day on university campus. She is not designed or meant to be a sexy character.

And I seriously disagree that Alyx Vance is a better developed and more interesting character than most Final Fantasy female leads. I mean, compare Yuna, who goes through a very interesting character arc throughout her game interwoven with concepts and commentaries of sacrifice, faith, duty, freedom and individuality. The deepest characterization we ever get of Alyx is that she built a robot gorilla she calls dog. No contest.

Alyx Vance is a perfectly serviceable character and an excellent fit for her place in Half Life 2, but holding her ups as one of the greats seems strange to me. Seems to me like some serious nostalgia blindness.

Final Fantasy hasn't had a likable female lead since Terra and Celes.

Let me just get this out of the way real quick: Final Fantasy has never been particularly well-written. For the entries all the way up to VI, they get a pass since storytelling in video games was still in its infancy and it was hard to tell a good story with the limited resources they had. When FF VII rolled around, the graphics improved and they had more resources to tell a story...but the writing didn't improve one bit, and has been stuck in the 90s ever since.

And that is the problem with most Final Fantasy characters. They're little more than pretty anime stereotypes. I like Alyx because she's more nuanced and subtle than any example you can get out of Final Fantasy, and doesn't give me any speeches about the power of friendship or some shit.

Alyx actually seems human, and behaves in a way most humans would, unlike her Final Fantasy counterparts.

Any character recently played by Troy Baker, since not only does he do the voice, but very likely did the mo cap as well, and oh my I bet the mo cap suit really shows off his hiney, and that golden hair of his,...

Turn around you bastard!

... I forgot where I was going with this. What were we talking about again? Sexy characters written well?

How about Kaidan from the Mass Effect series? Space dude that uses space magic that maybe could kill him and others, is reserved because of how aware he is of his powers harming others, understands that the greater picture of the galactic community is far more important than humanity's, and this exists!:

Why yes, that is Kaidan's model cosplayed as Kaidan.

Alyx seems like a completely shallow and uninteresting character to me. That is my problem with her, she has all the personality of a cardboard cutout. She isn't even written well. Literally everything to do with dog is just painful. The entire sequence with the gravity gun and dog is painfully bad and extremely tedious. "Look how clever she is, she made a gorilla robot and calls it dog. Ha ha." and then they proceed to drag that joke out for 5 minutes in one of the most tedious and drawn out tutorials in the history of video games, because they just had to show us how god damn clever they were to "seamlessly" work cutscenes and tutorials into the actual gameplay.

The writing in Half Life 2 is not particularly good, even by video game standards. The script is awkward, boring, and largely unnecessary. The characters never say anything interesting, they never do anything interesting. The best writing in the entire game is when the combine soldier knocks over a can and makes you throw it away. Frankly, the non story of Half Life was much better. My rule of thumb on writing is if every time the characters starts talking all I can say is "will you just shut the hell up so I can get back to playing my game" it is not good writing.

Basically, I'll take uninspired anime cliches over uninspired tediousness any day. But that is an opinion, your priorities might be elsewhere.

You know I was hoping that this would be a positive thread with us bonding over things instead of questioning the tastes of others. Was I too optimistic?

Looks like you were, brother.

Can't really blame people, though. Controversial subject. Close to people's hearts. And high emotions mixed with strong opinions can make for an unpleasant cocktail.

On-topic, I second Miranda and would also volunteer Viktoria from the Thief series. She's seductive, but she has her own personality and allegiances underneath. Also, does Faith from Mirror's Edge count? She's not exactly designed to be titillating.

Well, you did ask our opinions on what qualified as good writing and sexy girls. Unless we are all going to just "+1" other peoples posts (which is not allowed on these boards) there is only two real ways to contribute to this thread: "I think this character is sexy and interesting" and "I disagree". There are already at least 5 posts in this thread I would simply say something like "I agreed" to (bayonetta, Eliza, Tifa, Jessica , Tali) but under the escapists rules I literally cannot unless I think of something more to say. And there is just nothing else to say.

Basically, your idea is good but it is on the wrong forum. If you want a feel good circle where everyone agrees with each other over a fairly shallow topic (like which hot girls are also interesting) go somewhere else. The Escapists low content post rules make their forums the exact wrong place to expect a shallow but positive bonding thread. It is almost literally a banable offense here.

Edit: Also Chloe, and the Kaidan cosplay guy has a good ass.

There's a fine line between disagreeing with someone and questioning people's taste on the matter, especially in a demeaning way. This thread has well since crossed the line into the second category.

Disagreeing is questioning someone's tastes. You think you are right, they think they are right. Unless we are all just going to chime in to say "I guess we can agree to disagree", which seems entirely pointless. And would probably get us banned for low content.

And unless someone has invested a piece of their identity into the idea that either Final Fantasy or Half Life are great works of art, I really don't think anyone has been in anyway demeaning. Saying Half Life 2 or Final Fantasy VII or IX or X or whatever has bad writing is not an insult to people who like those games.

When did "I think X piece of media sucks" become an insult? Are we really to the point where we have to avoid offense so carefully that we can't even plainly express an opinion that something is bad without it being taken as a personal insult?

Try playing through Episodes 1 and 2. You'll change your tune.

I always thought Viconia DeVir - From Baldur's Gate 2 was well written

Elizabeth - BioShock infinite was also written well

Ellie - The Last of Us and Clementine - the walking dead

Chloe Frazer - Uncharted 2 was done well and I know I'll get hate for this but much better than Elena

Female Shepard Mass Effect 1 and 2 was alright but nothing too special.

That's a weird way to spell Tifa Lockheart.
