I cannot deside between Gandalf or Harry Dresden. Gandalf because well he's Gandalf I do not need to explain that and Harry Dresden because he is such a good character. Always doing what he thinks is right even through that normally means taking on something that is way out of his league. He always has a funny (normally insulting) remark for the bad guy and he is always quoting Obi-Wan, Yoda or Gandalf. So what do you guys think.

And I mean real wizards here not Harry bloody Potter. Althrough by best I do not mean most powerful Harry Potter is an embarrassment to wizards. he knew what 5, 6 spells at most. How crap is that.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, *****.

Well, that this if you want 110% wizard.

Kvothe the Arcane, the Bloodless, the Kingkiller, Meadre, Sixstring... ∞ if you want awesome person who also happen to know magic very well.

Harry Mother Fucking Dresden.

Nobody beats him, ever. Gandalf is all well and cool but Harry bests him at every turn at every turn. And lets face it, being a wizard never got Gandalf laid. Harry on the other hand...

If you're gonna open a discussion to fictional wizards, you have to accept them all. Even the ones you don't like.

Still, I personally give my vote to Harry Dresden for being awesome.

Gandalf the grey. I say the Grey because the White barely does anything in both the books and the film whereas the grey takes on a Balrog and has badass fireworks

I second Dresden.

My second favorite series of books ever, with the first being Discworld.

I don't know if he would actually count as a wizard but Rand Al'Thor (The Wheel of Time series) is shown to be able to slaughter hundreds of thousands and just plain destroy the world if he felt like it.

How dare you insinuate that wizards are only fictional!!!!!!

Um... I wonder if wizards from games count, because if so, I would say Kangaxx from a Baldur's Gate 2 side-quest was the most difficult boss in that game.

I should read some wizardy stuff...

Best wizard in fiction? I didn't know there were non-fictional ones...

Anyway, I'd say Gandalf, for me the archetype that Dumbledore was based on. Kindly old man, but dangerous when necessary.

Let's see, off the top of my head, I'd probably say Belgarath the Sorcerer. When it comes to magic, he's one of the best, though his nephew Belgarion is much stronger thanks to being a direct heir to the Rivan King, controlling the Orb of Aldur and being much younger (but his youth also brings with it inexperience which is where Belgarath shines).

Macross the Black from the Riftwar saga. This guy is an unaging, dimension hopping wizard who is shown to be far more powerful then any number of the other wizards in many dimesions and has a whole castle filled with his research notes and is still going.

Wizards eh....
Gandalf, Elrond? What about the most legendary one, King Arthurs most faithful helper, Merlin the Wizard. I mean in the Lore he's kind of badass.
There must be a lot mroe if we go into games and certainly there are loads of fantasy books which include wizards.
I can't give a good answer but I like Saruman ^^

Ben Adaephon Delat (Quick Ben) from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. No contest, to be honest.

I'm afraid my experience with wizards and wizardry is unfortunately lacking, but Olórin, known as Gandalf to the Westron, was a very powerful and wise wizard to be sure, and probably the best I've yet come across. Then again, the "wizards" of Arda, as they are called, are no less than what may be considered lesser gods, so in a way it's an unfair competition.

In my opinion, the only magician that comes close to the coolness that is Gandalf the White would have to be one Marisa Kirisame - the black-white - the brash kleptomaniac bibliophile and (proudly proclaimed) second best of all Gensokyo. She's defeated everyone in Gensokyo - even gods - in danmaku combat at least once, save for Reimu Hakurei. Fortunately for the world, Marisa and Reimu happen to be a rather close friends. Not that this means Marisa doesn't still practice every day so that one day she might surpass her, of course.

I don't consider Gandalf as a proper wizard. He was a demi or full god first(depends on what your view of the Maia is) and a wizard was more his side occupation. Well that and Tolkien never put much emphasis on magic in Middle-Earth so saying Gandalf was so amazing at wizardry to be considered the greatest wizard of all fiction is not something that I would accept.

Xardas, anyone?

I mean, wasn't he a guy who actually banished GODS of his universe to never again meddle in the matters of humans? And was a necromancer? With a spiky robe? Living in a tower surrounded by demons, golems, skeletons and what not?

Hairy Blackstone Copperfield Dresden.

No contest. Gandalf is a walking plot-point, not a character.
