And I mean real wizards here not Harry bloody Potter. Althrough by best I do not mean most powerful Harry Potter is an embarrassment to wizards. he knew what 5, 6 spells at most. How crap is that.
Rincewind, from the Discworld series, only knows one spell. And that's only on an unconscious level. It has the power to turn the world upside down. For me, he's still the best wizard of all.

Not because of his magical abilities...but because he can escape the Dungeon Dimensions armed only with a sock full of sand.

The difference beyween that and Harry Potter is that turning the world upside down is cool. Seriusly cool. Harry Potter could be out magiced by a house plant.

I cannot deside between Gandalf or Harry Dresden. Gandalf because well he's Gandalf I do not need to explain that and Harry Dresden because he is such a good character. Always doing what he thinks is right even through that normally means taking on something that is way out of his league. He always has a funny (normally insulting) remark for the bad guy and he is always quoting Obi-Wan, Yoda or Gandalf. So what do you guys think.

I don't know if he would actually count as a wizard but Rand Al'Thor (The Wheel of Time series) is shown to be able to slaughter hundreds of thousands, have the potential to destroy the entire world, and just plain destroy the world if he felt like it.
I think he should count. Also seriously. He managed to replace a city that was probably as big as any major city of today with a big hole in the ground while not using his power to attack it. When the effects of the surroundings of where it can be used are that vast I think he qualifies to be one of the best.

Even mighty Gandalf trembled when Big "S" name was spoken. And yea, he is a wizard.

Also : Bigby. Dem Fistz of Fury and their unconventional usage... :)

I'm not really invested in wizards all that much, but I guess Miraculix is my favorite because I love the art.

Is this really a contest? It's Rincewind from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

I mean, honestly.

Ninja'd :(

In that case Skullduggery Pleasant, he's a smart mouthed, skeleton detective, who shoots fireballs at people!

The only thing that could make that more awesome is if he had tits and was on fire.... OH NO WAIT! He sometimes is!

Hmm, I've always thought the Harpells where a hilarious lot to have around, though not sure if they'd fit under best wizard. So, with Gandalf being the obvious first place, I'll put Raistlin Majere in second. I mean, he's so awesome Blind Guardian has a song for him.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, *****.

Well, that this if you want 110% wizard.

Kvothe the Arcane, the Bloodless, the Kingkiller, Meadre, Sixstring... ∞ if you want awesome person who also happen to know magic very well.
^ this guy wins. /thread

Dumbledore is by far the most powerful wizard in fiction, let's be honest, gandalf doesn't do much magic. he sets some pine-cones on fire and makes beams of light that may or may not cause damage to what they hit. Not that impressive. He's more of a facilitator than a wizard, his main awesomeness comes from bringing people together to work for the same cause.

On the other hand, Kvothe is just absolute pure win. He can play a lute with 2 broken stings, he's smart enough to become functional in a language in a day and a half, he can split his mind into 8 distinct parts in order to work on 8 problems at once.
As he says:
"My first mentor called me E'lir because I was clever and I knew it. My first real lover called me Dulator because she liked the sound of it. I have been called Shadicar, Lightfinger, and Six-String. I have been called Kvothe the Bloodless, Kvothe the Arcane, and Kvothe Kingkiller. I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them.

But I was brought up as Kvothe. My father once told me it meant "to know."

I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, although very few were unearned.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me."

Well, if we're considering all fiction, I've been a huge fan of John Constantine ever since he saved the world by having sex. Twice.

Damn Rincewind ninjas! He's the best wizard to have a whole sequence of wild adventures while knowing only one spell, which he could not even remember.

I also love Asterix' druid. But he's a druid, that's a whole other class. His Hit Dice is d8 =P

Gandalf is the wielder of the Flame of Anor. He single-handedly beats the Flame of Udûn Balrog. And you tell me he doesn't wield much magic??
