if you want a game that you can easily lose days in Minecraft, i spent almost 4 weeks building a city that was 2500x4500 squares.
as for an actual city city game, not really sure myself since the last City game i played Sim City

I always enjoyed age of empires II for this actually, I would amass an army of villagers to clear the land of forests and all resources, and steadily build my city outwards. If you built a building than destroyed it, you could get a road tile on the map.

Looking back, I spent a lot of time building huge cities in games where I was supposed to be killing the other people.

I think it depends on what exactly you're looking to do.

There's everything from Roller Coaster Tycoon to the Sims to Minecraft. It's quite a varied genre

Christ, it takes me like an hour and a half to build a wooden box and find some coal. What am I doing wrong?

Also, Civilization maybe?

Minecraft for pure sandbox fun. Sim City 3000 for realism. The Sims series for interior and more detailed house building/decorating.

1503 A.D. is probably my favorite with the original Tropico as a close second. The rest of the Anno series is good too though.

ok so roller coaster tycoon for greatest game of all time? god i could play that for hours.

Civilization V is more nation building, but if you play on a giant map there's alot of city building and expansion, not just fighting.
