We all know that the henchman can claim the credit from the true villain, but which main villain did really good, and which ones...sucked? It doesn't necessarily have to be the last boss, just the one that was the major threat.

Good:

MacGruder from Gun. Say what you want, he had the whole "evil Western bastard" thing down pat.

Saren from Mass Effect. Granted, he was brainwashed, but still, he truly believed what he was doing, and actually did a really effective redemption at the end. He was still evil, but a well-developed villain all around, and not unsympathetic.

Bad:

Darth Traya from KOTOR 2: In my opinion, the bad way to do the whole "puppetmaster" thing. It just reeked of "HA! TWIST!" and she should not have been a villain. Sion? Yes. Nihilus? Hell yeah. Traya? No.

I was going to say Saren, that guy is scary even though he was just a puppet.
Doc. Robotnik is an incompetent fool.

Good: Giygas from Earthbound. The quitessential insane, unexplainable villain with a serious case of bipolar disorder.

Also Pyramid Head. Scariest villain ever, seems like a rapist or a thug at times, but when James finds out how Pyramid Head is connected to himself it actually makes him an even more awesome villain.

Bad: The Boss, MGS 3. She spends the whole game kicking your ass repeatedly, and even though she saves you a few times, it's always in really irritating ways. And then they expect you to feel bad when you have to kill her? As if.

good:
Arthas from warcraft 3
the entire prospect of him (a pussy turning into a ****) did a good job becoming evil and then more evil and then uber evil

Fountaine from bioshock was good though it got predictable about half way before you knew he was fountaine i have a weakness for the good ol brooklyn con man

bad:
Al mualim from assassins creed for some one who was all powerful (by the way him turning evil was absolutly no surprise) he was not only easy to beat but i mean come on any satisfaction you had in kill him immidiatly dissapeared when you realised your still captured and the enemies got what they want

carlito from dead rising he had absolutly no depth to him just some basterd wanting to kill every one because hes racist well not racist more...countryist...?

Best:

Revolver Ocelot: Very few bad guys can manage to pest you for four games straight. Ocelot did it and manganed to only lose half an arm. He beat the odds.

Ganondorf: If I need to explain to you who he is or why he is a bad ass, then something is wrong.

Crow: Because it's the freakin' S-N-Double O-P D-O-Double G.

Worst:

Inferno: Laaaaaame. All you are is a lazy effort at a boss. Namco could've done much better, but they never did....

Solidus Snake: You never, ever, ever seemed like a threat to me. When you're henchmen are more intimidating than you, something's wrong.

Nationalist? I was tempted to put Al Mualim too. Bad ending to a game.

Great Villains:

The Creepy-Voice God from Shadow of the Colossus whose name escapes me: When I found out that bastard was using me, I was so pissed.

Alex (GS series): For all intents and purposes, he won. If it wasn't for the cheap, send-an-overpowered-God-after-him ending, he would have won. /thread

Lezard Valeth: Certainly one of the most cunning villains in video games, not to mention the fact that his whole plot revolved around his stalker-like obsession with Lenneth Valkyrie. Plus he gets bonus points because "How Wicked Ruler" is the best villain theme hands down.

Bad Villains:

Well, I'm getting bored with Bowser, though he's not a particularly pathetic villain. Can't think of any other villains that I'd consider lame, except maybe Luther from Star Ocean 3, but that was the fault of the plot, not his character.

Mass Effect. As for Jack of Blades, I'd take him much more seriously if Jack Blades wasn't the bassist for Night Ranger.

Not a game but I think Thulsa Doom is the greatest villain ever in the history of everything.

Good: I found Lynx of Chrono Cross to be a damn good villain. And Nelo Angelo is the s*** in Devil May Cry.

Bad: Every villain in Devil May Cry 2 short of The Despair Embodied, who was actually kind of cool.
