They best storyline for me would have to be fallout 3 because of the many ways you can change the story by your actions in game also the way that your "antics" effect the people and things in the fallout 3 world, also the story line has some rather good twists and shocks.

The worst storyline would have to be the halo series because of its cliché sci-fi storyline and its also very transparent you could guess what the conclusion of Halo 3 was by playing the first level of halo: combat evolved.

I can name my favorite and least favorite story and it's all from one game.

The first half of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World easily had one of the best concept story I have ever heard. the world got completely screwed up because of your actions in the last game and now all the heroes from the first game are either making it worse or not doing anything to help. there was a lot of other stuff going on that takes to long to mention and I generally hold it in high esteem because it was so unique, no one had ever tackled the issues that arose from your actions in prequels, so I really fell in love.

However the second half of ToS:DotNW basically threw all that out the window and pulled 20 shamlonian twists out of nowhere hoping one would shock you, except it happened so often I really stopped caring what was going one, especially since they had made it so all of the interesting stuff wasn't true.

Wow, Halo bashing and you're only 9 posts old. What a rambunctious little scamp. *pinches cheeks*

Seriously? Fallout 3? The second game allowed even more freedom and was a lot funnier. KOTOR had a great storyline. The second game kind of fell apart at the end, but was shaping up to be great too.

I loved the storyline for Morrowind. In fact, that's one of the things I don't like about Oblivion, things like the graphics and the combat are better, but the story isn't nearly as deep.

Fallout 3 had the worst storyline of the fallout Trilogy (i know there was 4 but I dont call Tactics a real Fallout game).
The first Fallout had the best storyline.

Best
I personally really like the Jak storyline, great games too.

Worst
Resident Evil or FFX would be high on my list.

I would say my favorite was the storyline in XWing Alliance, with a family dealing with betrayal and fighting to hold what is theirs through the battle between the Rebellion and the Empire. It presents a very plausible and fun sideline to the main Star Wars storyline from after Empire to the end of Jedi. I miss the X-Wing series of Flight Sim games.

Worst one? Unreal 2, as it present some fun combat, but the storyline was weakly held together. Any single chapter could be left out and nobody would miss it, and the end was just a plain dork move. Anybody who thinks that plot device works is an idiot. It killed Matrix for me.

The best goes for either Mass Effect or BioShock. Mass Effect uses a nearly every sci-fi cliche but uses them so well that it simply blends into an incredible storyline. BioShock is just shocking. The twist at the ending was so unexpected that even after 2 years I still cant believe it. They used the good old "i'm your father" trick better than star wars did. As for the worst I agree with Blacklron Guardian

Toss up between Bioshock and Grim Fandango for me.

EDIT: Forgot to nominate my worst story too... Defcon's got a pretty bad story. EVERYONE DIES.

I'm probably the only person who will continue to defy mainstream beleif but I thought the Halo series had a really good story. To start off with it's a good solid trilogy with everything resolved at the end. Second there is a rather heavy emphasis on religeous metaphors and interwoven with subtle hints at historical events. There are the classic historical discoverys, all out war, betrayls, alliances and of course the Covenant attacking humans in the first place is similar to the Crusade. The brutes taking over from the Elites is similar to the Barbarians in rome. There is the Ark and the 'Flood' try to guess what THAT'S from. Halo has some nice metaphors and if you read some of the books you get to know the characters thast you would otherwise only vaguely be introduced to in game. I actually did a massive post about this in another thread so I won't repeat myself here but all I'm saying is storyline wise there certainly are worse. Besides Halo 2 is still the only game I'm aware of where the persepctive switches sides to the alien army instead of the human army and dared to characterise it's aliens with a little more humanity than most. The only other games I can think of that show friendly aliens are Half Life 2 and Mass Effect.

(that reminds me, other stories I like are Mass Effect, Half Life 2 (when I can actually follow the damn plot), Bioshock and Gears of War)

Also Halo doesn't have a shit story... I can't beleive no one's mentioned this yet. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!!
Look at the dross he's been showelling out lately, werehogs? Romances with humans? Teleporting into magical story lands?
Those are real bad stories people!

Whatever, just wash your hands.
lost planet, the game play was good but the story was definatly one of the worse Ive ever seen, a combination of over used story elements combined with a horrible under standing of ice and plant growth (I mainly remeber the end with you melting a little of the ice and it turns out the snow is like less then an inch deep and has grass and flowers growing under it)

It may be cliche but I consider it better than about 95% of all rpg's, action/adventure, and other fps's. Fallout is just as much cliche as Halo and there's games that had the effect of your actions results in certain endings before it came out (KOTOR is one of many). Today, anyone can predict the ending for a game within 3 or less tries and that includes rpgs like fallout 3. At least Halo felt epic...

Oh yea almost forgot, Halo has a NOVEL SERIES! Not to mention it's been on a top 100 novel list. They can make so many different series from it like how Halo Wars did.

Really? I liked it a lot, thought the main twist was well-done, and was happy with the way the main two characters developed.

I'd mention my two favorite games, but...since visual novels are made or broken by their story, it'd probably be cheating. I could also go without mentioning them once a day, so I'll second the Tales of Symphonia opinion (with Baten Kaitos Origins in a close second).

Ok, I love the game...BUT...No More Heroes, while having one of the best names in video gaming history, had possibly the worst storyline I've ever seen...there, I said it

The best one for me is a toss up between what people consider a true storyline. I would have to give the best storyline to Braid, though to get the full story requires painful hours of extra work. The best accessible storyline would have to go to Tales of Symphonia.
As far as a bad storyline goes I would need to go with Star Ocean Till the End of Time. I know a lot of people love the story from the game and it was the main reason I got it. Perhaps it is not as fresh after 3 times through but did we really need to hear all about the stupid UP3 every time we get to a new zone?

Halo 2 actually had a pretty good story with the Arbiter, offering you a viewpoint that contradicts the usual "alienns r baad!" idea.

I'd say my favorite would either be Metal Gear Solid or Chrono Trigger, my top 2 favorite games.
