Best Written Stories in Gaming

I have been around the block and have come into gaming where I just play them to really enjoy the story behind it. I find gameplay these days becoming bland and the same,but sometimes stories are just very good. What does everyone feel are some of the best storylines in a game they have ever played. Any genre can count, personally I like these stories

1. Final Fantasy XII
2. Grandia III
3. Killzone (series 1 & 2)
4. Pokemon (ya I know, but it had a nice simple story)
5. Chrono Trigger

Now I haven't played all games out there, this is just a couple I really enjoyed.

Braid. Definitely Braid. In fact, there is no doubt in my mind.

I also liked Bioshock, which had the caliber of a really good novel (intricate story, lots of complex characters, original plot with meaning) although the ending came up short.

I know it's kind of cliched but I liked GTA: San Andreas' story line, y'know rags to riches story.
same with Fallout 3 as well.

Bioshock
Tales of Symphonia (all of the characters' individual backstories get resolved)
Assassin's Creed
Ocarina of Time (the best presentation of the Mythos of Hyrule)

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 has a great story just for the fact that LOVELESS was a great parallel to the story. That and the characterization was great.

I'd have to say that out of all the games I've played Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time had the best story.

I'll nominate The Chzo Mythos.
The Brotherhood Line in Saints Row 2.
Endwar's plot was good, though cliched(Gasp, The Russians did it!)
I liked FF:Crisis Core's story, though I haven't played XII.

Gta 4 was quite good, I actually had a hard time with some of the decision making
Bioshock, just yeah, I won't say anything
Final fantasy IX was quite good because I like the characters more than the other final fantasies but all of them are good
Lost odyssey made me cry like a baby
Oh and the last one has to be Sword of mana, it wasn't the best story line but for what it had was very effective becauseof the brilliant characters

FF Tactics
Tales of Symphonia (the first one, because seriously, the second one kinda paled in comparison)
Portal
Assassin's Creed (even though we're still not quite viewing the whole picture)

Just my humble opinion.

I never even though of Tactics. It really is an excellent game. I agree with Oddessy, I played it for about 15 straight hours I was so into it, but it drops the ball for the entire last quarter of the game. For me MGS was good for the 1st game, I know some like it, but it lost my attention.

Also another I like if you follow just 1&2 is Resident Evil. Three ties in okay, but was more on the game play. Code Veronica was even decent just not as good, I haven't enjoyed the stories in 4 or 5 though.
