Actually, VTM: Bloodlines guns were vastly superior to melee combat once you got some decent weapons like the combat shotgun, or even more so in the late game when you get the Steyr AUG, which was basically a death laser beam.

it tends to get repetitive, but i guess thats the trade-off of having such massive, explorable worlds. fallout 3 really bugged me because it was clunky and VATS was basically a cheat button; they shouldve focused on the FPS-ing or stuck with turned based, instead of haphazardly including both. morrowind and oblivion had broken and expansive magic though, so at least combat was amusing at times with the enemies flying everywhere and attacking themselves to death with my reflect spells. ranged and stealth is rewarding at times, but attempts to balance stealth just make it more of a glorified critical hit later in the game, and having to constantly stock arrows becomes annoying when enemies start taking ridiculous amounts of damage, though thats a problem of the level scaling more than ranged combat.

at least in skyrim, melee combat is more showy and attacks seem to have more impact; still yet to see whether being a pure mage will suck for the first 10 levels before instantly becoming overpowered; or if ranged and stealth will continue to be the inverse; awesome early on, crap at later levels.

and even if it isnt, ill bet skyrim versions of deadly reflex and midas' magic spells will make their way to the modding scene to liven up combat.

Oblivion's combat was pretty damn stiff, but Skyrim's looks better. Won't really know until the game is out in what seems like forever from now.

The big turn off for me was the autoleveling difficulty. Every fight felt the same.

I like being able to see that early on a human will kill me and rats are a challenge...but over the game suddenly rats can be ignored and humans are target practice, now only the 20' super mutant is scary.

True.
Now I know I have said this in like a million other threads now, but mods can cure almost anything. When I played Oblivion, I usually played with a mod called Deadly Reflex that kept the Oblivion fight system, but improved it alot with the ability to bash with your shield (or any other off-hand item like torces etc.), kick staggered enemies, stealth kills like throat slitting and sleep-stabbing. It also changed some animations like the standing power attack was changed so that you stabbed your enemy instead of slicing at them (only with swords and daggers though), and all Acrobatic dodge animations where changed as well. It also added stuff like critcal hits and finishers. If you got a power attack critical hit you would go into slow motion, which gave you some time to aim at a certain part of the enemies body, and depending on where you where aiming at (head or the waist) you would either cut of his head or cut him in half, or crush his skulls with blunt weapons. I could go on and on about this mod, but it greatly improved the combat in Oblivion

You guys think that Oblivion's combat was bad, go play Morrowind.

Oblivion's combat was INFINITELY better than Morrowinds.

I was a huge Morrowind fan at the time, so when I played Oblivion I saw the combat as a drastic improvement.

I still don't really have many qualms with it.

Wave sword at enemy until enemy falls backwards with no feedback whatsoever. Not every game can be Condemned: Criminal Origins, but a little bit of weight to combat never goes amiss. I'm not a fan of Gamebryo and I'm glad they're getting a new engine for Skyrim, but Dark Messiah (HoMM) had better combat already using the source engine. I guess Bethesda games are good for exploration, but don't interact with anything until you mod the heck out of it.

I agree however Skyrim looks MUCH better, kill animations, better 3rd person, better magic and sword control. Skyrim looks to fix all those little problems of Oblivion, and I LOVE Oblivion.

Yea, they improved the combat but everything else got worse. (except for the graphics that is)
What else was worse? I mean, I know the world of Cyrrodil wasn't as cool as Morrowind's was, but I think they definitely did a good job at portraying the difference between the imperial world vs the Dunmer world.

Meh, I'm one of the few who even loves the Morrowind combat, so I'm sure I'll be fine with anything they churn out in Skyrim.

Iv'e never liked Bethesda's melee and I think it's pretty pointless but they seem to have gotten the point in Skyrim from the gamplay videos so I think they are heading in the right direction.

The crappy combat is the only thing I didn't like about the elder scroll series and that always kept me from playing the game for more then a week.

I just saw a video from e3 where Todd Howard shows off some combat and dungeons (which look insanely awesome), all in all it looks fantastic.

Oh and the video in question:

Oblivion was so much more generic overall compared to Morrowind. It didn't have retarded ass level scaling , MW had better writing, more depth, less hand holding, you know, the same things that have been stated over and over again..
It's just a shame the graphics have aged so badly and the run speed at the start of the game makes you want to punch somthing. :<
