I mean really, was this EVER in question? This seems like the most obvious statement ever made.

No shit?

Sure, WRPG's usually have the typical Dragons, Wizards, Demonic Cults and shit. JRPG's? Female looking teenagers who save the world with Swords the size of a car, with gravity defying hairstyles. You tell me which one is more likely?

If anyone thinks that statement is false (sure, it's pretty out there, but it's still true) than you are quite possibly retarded.
Where is everyone getting the hair example from? I've got a bunch of JRPG's with characters that have completely normal hair styles.

Would you like the names?

For all the more basic hairstyles, you have stupid stuff like this that kill all credibility, particularly Exhibit C.

Uh, he's right, you know. Nothing about the characters defy gravity, most of the time, anyways. I am of course referring to JRPG hairstyles and weapons that are 7 feet long, so already there, on a logical basis WRPGs gets a point in their favor for realism. Where as alot of JRPGs are about a bunch of emo tweens bashing up impossible monster while, hell, I don't know, they travel through TVs, most WRPGs are based in fantasy, grounded in real legends and time periods. Again, WRPGs are more realistic. And my third and final point: Moogles. Impossibly tiny wings capable of flight, oversized heads and frakking pompoms on their heads that serve absolutely no purpose, the list could go on, but I really see no point. With that said, I really like alot of JRPGs, and that love mostly comes from them being far out, take airships ala Final Fantasy, for instance. I bleedin' love airships.

Niether JRPGs nor WRPGs are usually realistic, but JRPGs do tend to be more surreal/crazy.
Whatever the case may be, I don't think it should be something to get worked up about.

Both this thread and this topic are pointless, and you should all feel ashamed of yourselves for participating in it.

Like the "realism" of any RPG is even a factor in enjoying it. I can't imagine why Bethesda would even make that statement.

It's just a staple of JRPG's, like the whole girly looking teenagers and colossal swords that they swing around as if it was a lightsaber.
Well they are about the same realism wise.
Just by your example the JRPG one sounds more likely though.
I mean some people do have hair that defies gravity Naturally.
And those swords aren't really that much Larger than Claymores.
Take Cloud (is it Cloud?) from Final Fantasy. Pretty slim figure, has truly gravity defying hair, has a sword that is MUCH bigger than a Claymore.
He used to have a normal sword. The sword he owns in FFVII was given to him by Zack, who died right before FFVII, who got the sword from a man named Angeal whom he looked up to who supposedly died a short time before FFVII, who got it from his father. Cloud used to be a normal SOLIDER with a normal sized sword. If Zack had never given him the Buster sword, he would've used a katana or something.

And that was the nerdiest explaination of something I've given in the past 3 hours. And his hair is fucked up. But it looks cooler later on in the movie and in Dirge of Cerberus.

True, but that's Square Enix. While I llove the company, people need to stop using them as the JRPG standard. There ARE other companies. Atlus is a great place to start.

I'm not getting worked up. All I'm saying is that BETHESDA should not decide what is realistic.

I don't see the big problem here, all RPG's whether their Western of Japanese go through similar motions. As for Realism I think whatever happens in Fallout is a lot more believable than the stuff I've seen in Japanese games. I can see the plot of New Vegas happening real life, but diving in TV's (Persona 4) I can't ever see that happening out of a drug trip.

You never saw the FFVII buster sword and the way he swings it like it has no weight?

I'm just going to add this,
If either RPG is realistic to the core, it would suck. There wouldn't be any dragons, any power armor, any fire demons, no blue women you could sex up, no massive 2 ton swords, no chicken suits. I know this isn't the discussion, but it brings up the question, Who honestly cares about realism in RPGs of all things?
In a different matter, when I get Skyrim, I'm going to run around with two shields in my hands like an idiot. Would anybody who cares about realism do this? Probably not but, remember kiddos, it's a video game. You don't need to get all hot and bothered with realism.

I already knew Bethesda were stupid, I don't need an article like this to verify the point, but it is a good thing to know anyway.

No, RPGs should not be realistic, however, if it is sci-fi then it should have science in it and I would love Bethesda to explain to me why after 200 years there is still so much radiation floating around the Capital Wasteland.

Oh and aren't Bethesda the people who made the Experimental MIRV and Rock-It launcher?

Cloud was infused with the magical strength element of the day; Mako. He got Mako poisoning before FFVII but after Zack died he was back to normal (except mentally) and was suddenly ultra powerful.

I think he's mistaking "realistic" to mean "based in worlds with similarities to our own."
Pretty much this. JRPGs tend to make the entire world fantastical, while WRPGs only make certain things fantastical. If you give some game a setting that seems like it could very well be found on our own planet Earth and characters that sound like people we might actually know, it becomes easier to mix in less plausible things and still have people think "that could happen".

WRPGs do this pretty frequently. JRPGs, basically, just say "Screw that. Let's make an entirely different world with its own rules". The Persona games deviate from this, because they are set in what is supposed to be the real world. But, I think they make up for that lack of fantasy with a fantastical atmosphere.
