Better games on the handhelds?

It just occurred to me that there are more games I'd like to have on the ds than on the 360, ps3 and wii combined.

Maybe it's more fun for developers to make games for the handheld consoles, less pressure somehow, more creativity. No? Just a thought.

Well, you can't update games on handhelds. At least those like Gameboy Advance. So developers take extra care to make sure they work and are worth buying. Especially since every single console game is more expensive at a console than on a PC.

Also, you might just like the handheld gaming more. I like Golden Sun and Megaman games more than a lot of games on PC... But you can't play them online, now can you.

There is more originality on the Handheld market (mostly DS). And the same old stamping out of franchises year in year out is bogging down the entire console market. There is too much pressure to make things people are farmiliar with on consoles. if it's too different then no one will buy it and you will have wasted 10 Million on something nobody gives a toss about. handhelds offer lower production costs and the ability to create something new without alienating the majority of handheld owners.

Handhelds usually have that oldschool feel to a new game, like Ratchet and Clank, or Castlevania. You are either having nostalgia or you hate your current console. Or both.

Well, the GBA definitely had a better games lineup than the Gamecube did, but it ultimately comes down to the libraries of individual consoles.

Well, I don't like the games are being made nowadays, that's true. Last game I digged that was available to me was Bioshock. I just think it's interesting that the handheld market might be the most stimulating one for developers, if there's some truth to that.

There are plenty of games that i want for my DS at the moment, but they are all overshadowed by my 360 yelling "Look, Shiny" at me. i really hate that i can't be bothered to go out and buy Professor Layton or Chinatown Wars.

What I enjoy about handheld games is the different spin it offers on previous console based series. I bought Resistance: Retribution on PSP on Friday and I'm absolutely loving it. Ratchet & Clank and Final Fantasy also play really well on Sony's miniture marvel.

As for the DS, I love Pokemon so that was an instant sell and I've really enjoyed catching up with and old friend in Sonic. Brain Training is fun (certainly a lot better than the PSN offering) while games like Hotel Dusk and Mario Kart kept me playing for days on end.

I even remember the day I got my GameBoy Colour with Pokemon Blue Version and Worms Armaggedon.

There's definitely a unique dynamic when it comes to handheld titles. With lower relative production costs, developers can often throw the extra odd dollar into the creative pool to come up with a truly neat game. I often cite the Castlevania series as the best example. Their attempts on the Playstation 2 mostly flopped, but the GBA and DS titles have always impressed. Hell, I'll throw in the Dracula X remake on the PSP for good measure. Point being, they're better off not bothering with high production values when it comes at the expense of making a good game.

Of course, lower production values can also lead to a total phoning in, aka shovelware. Be wary.

Hell yeah, even though there's so many games of Pokemon now, they're still good games that offer a lot of fun
