Is World of Warcraft honestly a good, immersing game? or are there much better versions of online play out there?
If you do end up playing drop me a line on Moonrunner. I'm Auroht there.

I'd gladly help you get started.

As long as you don't get caught up in the trade channel (just turn it off) and as long as you are looking for stupid fun, wow has that.

Also the quest text is VERY fun to read now. Some folks don't like that sort of thing but they present you with novels of lore throughout the game.

Eve. A bajillion times, eve. If you can slug it through the (continuous) learning curve, it's an amazing experience.

Here is the thing about WoW,I actually give two shits about the world it's fun at level cap and it has HUGE population but honestly I would never get into it without a friend or two.WoW is meant to be played socially and going in by yourself is a horrible option same with just about any MMO.For me as well I'd call the WoW leveling experience bearable at best and the only real satisfaction for me comes from level cap raiding. So if you want all that enjoyment and fulfillment right from the start and you're only playing by yourself WoW is not for you.Though in the end it is a good game and I'd recommend it,but only if you have friends to play it with.

WoW was ok. I can see how people might have had fun with it, but I just couldn't get into it.

Guild Wars was good. A lot of people ***** that its "not an MMO" and I suppose technically it isn't. But there's no subscription fees, and you can get a leg up on Guild Wars 2, which is going to be freaking epic, and STILL no subscription fees! (now if only you had a group of friends [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Guild-Wars] to play with...)

Rift... I haven't played, but I've heard good things. It copies WoW pretty well, and improves the formula enough to keep it interesting.

Also upcoming is Star Wars: The Old Republic. I've heard good and bad about it, but it's certainly one to watch in the coming months, especially if you're a Star Wars fan.

Lord of the Rings: Online just went free to play. "Freemium", they call it. You can play, but you have to unlock content by paying money.

Free Realms is another "freemium" one I've heard good things about. Not the best, but it offers a lot of variety in gameplay (it is extremely "kidsy").

DC Universe Online, is an updated-graphics version of Champions Online with fewer customization options. Both are worth looking into.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Any MMO is only as fun as the friends you play it with."

I would suggest City of Heroes/villains/rogues however i played that for quite a while and got bored of it, but it was fun whilst it lasted.

I would suggest guild wars 2, but it's not out yet. It looks pretty descent and doesn't require a subscription however =)

Its a good game but... choose horde. nobody plays alliance.
1 server doesn't make the whole world, actually in total there are more alliance characters that get played than hordes (Alliance have humans, basically)

WoW has it's ups and downs. There are certainly parts that get boring (I happen to be in one of them right now, the Outlands is boring as hell) but then at other parts, the game can really shine.

You could always just play the 14 day trial for WoW to see if you like it. I recommend playing the Undead starting area.

No. No, no, no. You are (sorry Yahtzee) provably wrong.

The only possible way Eve is fun is if you're prepared to sink an astonishing amount of time into it, and have a group of friends that are already set up in it.

Starting off Eve as a new player with no friends is just asking to be abused, mocked, lied to, cheated, abused some more, harrassed, killed repeatedly, stationlocked by bastards etc.

Eve has, by far, the worst community of any game I've ever played if you're coming in from the outside. Even within corps (except for a very few, invite only types - see complaint about already having friends there) - there's nothing that passes for loyalty and teamwork. Even WoW's ALLIANCE has better community... and that's saying something!

And this is coming from somebody who's played like 12 P2P MMO's and around 6 F2P MMO's.....

Avoid Eve at all costs unless you've already got friends set up there.

If you like hack and slash try Vindictus [http://vindictus.nexon.net/] Free with some of the best graphics out there, actually scratch that, this has the best free MMO graphics by about three continents. Also really fun, so full it gets a bit crowded at times, and... yea what more dya want, how bout this:

Rift is currently WoW 2.0 really. It's a better version of the game with plenty of cool features. Some still prefer WoW, but frankly, for a new user (and hell, even for most old ones), I don't see why you'd be playing WoW over Rift atm.

Personally, I'm waiting until SW: TOR comes along. Imo it's gonna be the best option (particularly for my tastes) until we start seeing true action MMOs based on decent IPs.

WoW was never good, never. It was just the best at what it did. I'm not doing a Yahtzee here, but I quit shortly after TBC because it was a glorified numbers game wrapped in a chat room, and I hated it. I hated that skill mattered less than numeric values. I hated that nothing felt persistent. I also despised the seriously imbalanced nature of the classes, and that in order to optimize the money they'd earned from us, the developers made everything some sort of pathetic timesink, meant to serve no further purpose than to make what could have been simple and easy (Map Travel ala Guild Wars) into a good reason to go fix a meal, let out the dog, nap, etc (griffon travel).

Cool, but... don't quite see the appeal. Like, at all :\

Gryphon ride > instant teleport (unless appropriate and rare such as WoW portals). It's far more immersive, the instant travel completely takes away any notion of world size. Oh and I don't hold that opinion reserved for WoW or even the entire MMO genre. It's one of the few things I hate about ME2 for example.
