I find that if you check the obvious "camwhore" (to use teh proper web vernacular) entries most of the comments are people pissing and moaning about how it's getting more attention than their stuff. What they fail to realize is that by constantly bringing attention to that which they want ignored, they only strengthen and feed the "camwhore".
The deviant art community doesn't sit well with me already on most days, but the pissing contest which takes place when a non-drawn pair of tits shows up just flat out disgusts me. It's literally one of the most pretentious and self-absorbed displays of idiocy I know of on the internet. You end up with pages and pages of sanctimonious comments from people who are angry
because it steals attention away from them. No, they don't directly say it but the subtext is there in the form of "legitimate hardworking artists". If you're posting stuff to deviant art then you're obviously hoping for some kind of attention and praise for your hard work.(you are a "hardworking legitimate artist") You want people to pat you on the back and go "good job", an understandable aspiration since recognition and validation is something we all desire. Which is why I find it to be a situation of hypocrisy where one person pining for attention calls out and insults another person who's doing the exact same thing, but simply being more blunt about it. The pot calling the kettle black as it were.
"Camwhores" are just a different kind of troll. They feed on the attention and get their kicks fighting it out, or watching their legions of fans fight it out, with someone who's butthurt over all the attention they're getting. Thus, bringing more attention to them as controversy is stirred up within the community. The same rules apply as everywhere else:
Don't feed the troll, it will soon starve and leave.
