I wasn't lucky enough to play the first one and I was wondering, with the potential release of a sequels trailer, what made the game so good?

It's a standard action-adventure "collect everything that's not tied down" type game, but with a compelling story and unique world.

It's 10 bucks on steam, I recommend.
It was just a fun game, I don't know what made it good or bad. The music was amazing, that really helped (Propaganda in the Akuda bar really stands out). Combat is fun, level design is intriguing there is lots to explore and collect. It's certainly a PG rated game, but it's quite fun and the story contains adult themes like societal collapse, social revolutions, military suppression, police states and propaganda. While kids wouldn't find much in these themes since they wouldn't understand them, adults really get another layer out of the game for this reason.

It's also named after Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche, one of his key works in which he develops his notions of the Übermensch and going beyond good and evil. Rather, going beyond societal pressures of morality to form our own morality. Transcending humanity. It's a good piece. If you're interested in reading it I much prefer the Kaufmann translation:

I like to think of it as a cross between Deus Ex's paranoid storyline with Zelda's gameplay. Yeah, this game was lots of fun.

I liked everything except the game breaking bug that bit me.

It doesn't appear to delve too deeply into any genre beyond third person, but that just keeps things fresh. The best little bits of everything and good level design. Most things are optional too, even though you'll end up wanthing to do the majority anyway.

This.

[small]They can make you care about an anthropomorphic grease-monkey pig.
Yeah, its that good.[/small]

You know how Ocarina of Time's gameplay? Though the two games are pretty different, take the thrill you get from playing that.
Now add characters who are painfully kindhearted, but somehow very likable and engaging.
Then take some cartoon quirk and art style, a kind of predictable but good storyline, and package it up in good presentation and pretty well-polished gameplay.
(Yeah, there are some bugs, but you'll likely not find any unless you're looking for them.)

I can vouch that I never ran into any bugs.

I picked it up off of Steam a couple days ago just for kicks. After just a few hours of play I'm already getting attached to Jade and Pey'j and I think its going to be well worth the money. I had seen the teaser trailer for the new one, but I went back and watched it now that I've played a little bit and I'm already getting excited to see what they have in store. I just realy hope this doesn't end up being a good_old_game_IP+shoddy_remake/sequel/prequel=cashcow formula projects that seem so common these days in the film and game industries.
