After writing up some of my Redshirt Chronical... story... things, I've come to realise that you play a lot of really huge arseholes in games. Tequilla in Stranglehold was litterly breaking the law and by killing people who have thus far, have not been underinvestigation (as far as you're awear). You just assume these people are evil. You also destory millions in property, ruining peoples businesses. In the new Superman games you can freeze people, chuck their cars into the ocean and tear chunks out of buildings. Now playing Assassins Creed I can really so who wins the biggest rsehole Award. Altir stabs inoccent, barges through them, kills off gaurds who are only trying to uphold the law, smashing stands, killing leppers and running people down on horses. Has anyone else noticed this?

Also... 1000 POSTS!!! COMBO BREAKER!!! ;sdJfgASD VJ'w!!!!!!

But Altair doesn't have to do those things, and in fact, the game is designed so that you're supposed to NOT do that, though you have the option. Okay, maybe it's necessary to kill the guards at times, but what you describe doesn't make Altair the asshole, it makes the PLAYER the asshole, nothing personal against yourself. It's like if I play Crackdown and pick up cars, throw them into a sea of innocent civilians, boot productive members of society into the air and then riddle them with bullets before they hit the water at the bottom of the bridge and then say that the hero of Crackdown is a jerk. No, that just makes ME a jerk, and yes, that's how I typically play Crackdown.

When it comes to bastards in a Game, i could count quite a few Bosses and "opponent" Characters, but that would be kinda boring.

So...let's see...i liked Frank West from Dead Rising as being kinda self-centric. Yes, he helps out people, but then again he always seems to be more concerned on getting the "Scoop".

The Prince (of Persia) is also kind of a jerk. In Part 1 he's a naive moron who has a smug tone in his voice, and in Warrior Within he is some sort of whiney berserker Emo who tries to run from a destiny he had coming.

And of course, Kratos is kind of a despicable guy.

Oh, and Shepard can be a freakin Asshole at times, if you want him too (yes, that goes to the realm of player actions, but then again, the things he says and does are still scripted)

While playing FFXII it struck me that the best course of action for the main characters would be to just settle down and let daily life continue as normal while conquered.

Grats on Going Gonzo!

You'll find that most game characters that you play are bastards if you talk about what they do and not why they do it. Altair is an assassin, so he thinks he's fighting for good, it's open to anyone's interpretation really, like if I think the French people are a bunch of arrogant bastards (not what i think, just an example) then that's what I think, but someone might disagree.

Meh, i'm waiting for the biggest bastard of all time in a computer game, I suppose Duke Nukem could be seen as one, but there's still not an ultimate bastard character.

True. But if the game allows the player to say, have the ability to pee on the blind, I'm pretty sure people will spend all day doing just that. They don't have to but it's just more fun. After finishing Crackdown, and there was no gangsters around anymore, what was the first thing you did? I for one blew up some cars in a victory dance. Never mind those poor innocent people driving to work or going to pick there children up from school, nup, I just killed all the mob bosses and probably got a promotion. With the begger women in AC, wasn't it so much easier to give them a quick slap/stabbing/throwing then to try and escape their annoying grasp?

It's strange with Shepard. When I decided to give up being good and make an evil character, he isn't ecactly evil at all (so far anyway). All the 'evil' speech options just makes him sound like a real jerk, not evil.

i would beg to differ. inphyy from ninety nine nights is a complete *****. and shes the main character. sure, here parents were killed by goblins, but that doesnt mean she can kill hordes (no pun intended) of innocent civillians just because her quest for revenge wont be satisfied? the player has no control over this btw, she mercilessly kills women and children in cutscenes, whether you like it or not.

Shirro, from One Must Fall 2097

In this obscure (But fun) giant-robot fighter from the PC's tournament mode, one of the worst opponents you'll ever face is Shirro, because he has the highest amount of power in the game (Player characters are all given a certain amount of power, endurance, and agility) and always chooses the Thorn (One of the giant robots you can pick) as his robot, which incidentally is one of the most agile in the game.

Basically after that his whole gameplan broils down to "Dash, Grab, Toss. Dash, Grab, Toss. Dash, Grab, Toss."

That's mid-90s AI for you, I guess.

That's kinda the point. After everyone baasically complaining that the "Evil" PC options basically amount to petty bullying and extortion as you're saving the world/galaxy anyway, and rarely actually make you feel evil in the way the Big Bad always is, they started veering away from that, and appear to have achieved it with Mass Effect. (Protip: Play a female Renegade, the voice actor does a far better job of it).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned THE biggest bastard in a game.

The bastard I'm talking about is of course the guy from Postal 2. You could kill every single person you meet in the game, or light them on fire with gasoline and matches, or you can stand around watching people puke after you just pissed them in the mouth. Also he used cats as silencers on his weapons. There can't be any doubt he is the biggest bastard of all time, everyone else is just comparing people to him.

Biggest bastard in a game? That's pretty easy.

Ok, so i actually have two of them, but that's not the point: Laharl and Etna from Disgaea.
I mean, did you see the way they pick on poor old Mid-Boss? So cruel.

Well, Bioware never intended that Shepard can be really "evil"
As they often stated, Shepard's Intentions and Goals are always towards the "right thing" or what he thinks is right (see the Renegade ending for subtle examples), and that the player "only" controls the means he will reach these goals.
The choice between Paragon and Renegade isn't "Good or Evil", it is more like "aggressive and harsh or defensive and kind", wich, i might add, works far better for these kinds of game.

The biggest bastard in a game ever is the Colonel from MGS. He didn't tell you anything of use and kept ordering you to go on suicidally.

The idiots on BF2 who blow you up if you get in 'their' jet; even though they can't figure out how to fly the damn things anyway.

Character wise? I really can't think. Developers make main characters far too likeable. The whole 'Shepard from Mass Effect' has got stuck in my head after reading this thread, and I am inclined to agree. Some decisions (like, say 'the thing with the flagship at the end') can, occasionally, be far too tempting to resist. But it really does depend on the guy behind the controls.

I would think Tommy Vercetti (or any of the GTA characters) would be near the top of this list.

Of extremely dangerous omnicidal Bug Eyed Monsters who would happily have done the same to everyone else, and nearly did once.
