Looking back over 2011 and all the games that came out, there were a few that I found to be grossly disappointing. In my case, one of the games I was looking forward to the most was Assassin's Creed: Revelations. I was psyched to see the next chapter in the story and, of course, looking forward to - as Yahtzee so eloquently put it - out NPC'ing people in the multiplayer. The multiplayer was just as fun as it was in Brotherhood, but the story that I had been looking forward to was absolute crap.
For me, AC: Brotherhood stood well enough by itself, I don't agree that it was essentially a glorified DLC that was marketed as a full game. Yes, you're still playing the character from AC II, but no one ever said that the main character of the AC games would be different in every one of them.
Revelations, on the other hand...yeah, that one DOES seem like it should have been a downloadable expansion for Brotherhood. For starters, the game just seems empty and hollow when compared to the other AC games. I mean hell, the first person you assassinate is half-way through the game, and it turns out he was really a good guy! (I don't count the captain with the journal at the very beginning...that's not an assassination so much as it is a chase-down. The guards know to be looking for you, they know that you're coming, it's just really not a true assassination in my opinion)
But beyond the fact that you only really assassinate like 3 people in the game, it just seems waaaaaaaay smaller than any of the previous AC games. In the literal sense: the city is tiny compared to the settings of the previous games and really the story itself seemed a lot shorter as well. In previous games you always end up spying on some clandestine meeting of all the badguys and that's how you make your list of targets, the rest of the game is undermining said targets until you're ready to strike.
I won't even get into how rage-quit inducing the tower defense minigame was and how it's absolutely manditory unless you just say screw it and not do anything until you've got a Master Assassin guarding each of your bases so you don't have to worry about them.
So yeah, for me the most recent huge let-down as far as a game is concerned was AC: Revelations. How about you? What game were you REALLY looking forward to that ended up being a nice big shit-sandwich? Doesn't have to be "of 2011", could be any game in the past that you thought was worth buying but turned out to be hardly worth renting.
