Looking back over 2011 and all the games that came out, there were a few that I found to be grossly disappointing. In my case, one of the games I was looking forward to the most was Assassin's Creed: Revelations. I was psyched to see the next chapter in the story and, of course, looking forward to - as Yahtzee so eloquently put it - out NPC'ing people in the multiplayer. The multiplayer was just as fun as it was in Brotherhood, but the story that I had been looking forward to was absolute crap.

For me, AC: Brotherhood stood well enough by itself, I don't agree that it was essentially a glorified DLC that was marketed as a full game. Yes, you're still playing the character from AC II, but no one ever said that the main character of the AC games would be different in every one of them.

Revelations, on the other hand...yeah, that one DOES seem like it should have been a downloadable expansion for Brotherhood. For starters, the game just seems empty and hollow when compared to the other AC games. I mean hell, the first person you assassinate is half-way through the game, and it turns out he was really a good guy! (I don't count the captain with the journal at the very beginning...that's not an assassination so much as it is a chase-down. The guards know to be looking for you, they know that you're coming, it's just really not a true assassination in my opinion)

But beyond the fact that you only really assassinate like 3 people in the game, it just seems waaaaaaaay smaller than any of the previous AC games. In the literal sense: the city is tiny compared to the settings of the previous games and really the story itself seemed a lot shorter as well. In previous games you always end up spying on some clandestine meeting of all the badguys and that's how you make your list of targets, the rest of the game is undermining said targets until you're ready to strike.

I won't even get into how rage-quit inducing the tower defense minigame was and how it's absolutely manditory unless you just say screw it and not do anything until you've got a Master Assassin guarding each of your bases so you don't have to worry about them.

So yeah, for me the most recent huge let-down as far as a game is concerned was AC: Revelations. How about you? What game were you REALLY looking forward to that ended up being a nice big shit-sandwich? Doesn't have to be "of 2011", could be any game in the past that you thought was worth buying but turned out to be hardly worth renting.

Brink.

Brrrrink.

I was really looking forward to a cool multiplayer game. Instead, we got a mediocre game with a high barrier of entry keeping most from getting to the few good bits. Especially since class specific customization for weapons, abilities, etc. had to be unlocked, when you really needed those from the get go, then upgrading those as you progessed. The parkour was bad, too.

Homefront is my runner-up. A cool, implausible story, with a potential for a great game, but it was such a let down. Short, bland, and the multiplayer sucked.

The big let down of last year was Duke Nukem. I played the first two levels and had a couple of chuckles, but I really felt that the King has fallen.

Skyrim, I know I know, I should burn in hell and all. But really the game felt more like an Oblivion expansion than an actual stand alone title

It's a tie between Mass Effect and Dead Island.
First features the protagonist i can't relate to at all. For me even Mario seems more alive than "The Shep".
Second features mechanics i can't accept. Unbreakable barricades made from suitcases ?

There goes my immersion.

Ah well...

Another game that I thought was a HUGE let-down was Dragon Age 2. I really didn't like the fact that you spend the entire game in a single city, but I can understand that because the story is about specifically The Champion's rise to power within the city. That said, there is one damning fact that can never be forgiven: Every. Single. Fucking. Dungeon. In. That. Game. Is. Copy. Pasted. Over. And. Over. Seriously Bioware? What, did you guys blow your load on remaking the combat system and coming up with a pretty fun story that you forgot to buid unique dungeons? I mmean that was a mistake they made with the first Mass Effect: every random planet you land on has one of 3 possible main-locations: Generic Cave, Generic Werehouse, or Generic Bunker/Lab. They fixed this with the first Dragon Age and with ME 2.....so why in god's name did they go BACK to that horrible idea for DA 2?

:p I was hoping someone would bring up dirty ol' Duke. Let me ask you this, though: just what exactly WERE you expecting from DNF? Were you expecting a non-stop thrill ride that would make you laugh in the face of anyone who even mentions Call of Duty? Because I certainly wasn't. I rented DNF over a weekend and had my fun with it. You have to look at it in perspective: this is a Duke Nukem game. I should really be expecting nothing more than DN 3D with shiny new graphics. It's the same toilet humor, it's the same steroid-pumped self-proclaimed badass spitting out corny one-liners and making cornier puns. But that's really what I remember about the Duke, so to me, DNF lived up to every expectation I had for it.

I still laugh in the faces of anyone who was foolish enough to think the game was worth buying, but I can honestly say that for a Duke Nukem game, I thought it did it's job pretty well. The keyword being "for a Duke Nukem game". That said, I can entirely understand everyone being disappointed in it...13 years in developement hell and the best they can do is essentially remake DN 3D with better graphics and a couple gimmic game mechanics? Yeah...that's pretty lame...

:p So basically what you're saying is that you just don't like the Elder Scrolls series in general...cause pretty much all of them have the exact same format: go through the short tutorial experience, then you're thrust out into the world and told to go have fun. Essentially, by your logic, Oblivion would have just seemed like an expansion of Morrowind, and Morrowind would have just been an expansion of the one before it. :p But trust me, you wouldn't be the first person to say they genuinely were disappointed with Skyrim.

I do enough research into a game and decide if it's right for me before I buy it so that I am never disappointed by the games that I buy. I only bought a small handful of games of 2011, but I wasn't disappointed by any of them.

However, my biggest game related disappointment for the year was the fact that Capcom announced they wouldn't be localizing Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

So my biggest disappointment doesn't come from a game, but not being able to enjoy one.

My biggest problem with Dead Island was that in regards to the zombies: they have no clipping for you. But in regards to your character, you do have clipping for the zombies. Simply put: a charging zombie can literally run right through you and the next thing you know it's raping you from behind...yet if you're trying to back-peddle away from a horde of zombies and one's behind you, you're not going anywhere.

My biggest disappointment from Capcom was that they came out with Marvel vs Capcom 3...woo-hoo! Been hoping for this game! Wait....what's that? They're going to re-release MvC 3 in about 5 months with nothing new other than a handful of additional characters? God damnit...

Ha ! I know it all too well.
How one can enjoy his game, if its mechanics works against him ? :|

:p You know that's exactly what I said about Dark Souls. For me, yes, the game was challenging and brutally unforgiving, but it was the actual mechanics of the game more than the constant montage of death that made me rage-quit and swear never to play it again.

Probably Dragon Age 2.

Maybe Batman Arkham City, but I'll wait until I get further into it to finally make a judgement.

DNF wasn't really a disappointment, simply because I expected it to suck.

Also NFS: The Run. So bad.

Problem is I already broke the universe yesterday when, in another topic, I actually admitted that I was /wrong/ about something.

Someone on the internet admitting that they're wrong? And not just being a pigheaded jackass and trying to argue even though all evidence points to the contrary of their opinion?! Yup. The world really is scheduled to end this year.

I wasn't really expecting anything. I just hoped, maybe, just maybe, Gearbox could take a failing franchise and make it the same Duke that we all knew and loved (or hated). I loved what I played because it was funny and tongue in cheek. But hey, hopefully they make a sequel that will be awesome.

Oh dear.
Oh dear...
I must excuse myself. It's almost 9PM here and the best shops with beverages of undisputed quality are soon to be closed. My sobriety prevents me from accepting this grim truth, so let it be damned then ! ;)

WoW: Cataclysm. Deathwing didn't break Azeroth. Blizzard did.

I never played Star Wars Galaxies, but now I know what the NGE must have felt like.

Oh, indeed... Although it taught me a lesson, it did. What you think you want might not always be what's best for you.

Flying mounts just ain't a very good idea, although this was an unusually harsh way to learn that.
