This thread has been done at least a half-dozen times, but, yes, I know the search bar is broken.

Anyways, OT:

TES4 - Oblivion: It was thematically less rich than Morrowind, its predecessor, in that the world was not very convincing, there were less factions and less inter-faction conflict which really made Morrowind intriguing and deep. Also, the art design was very generic, all variations of western medieval settings - stone and thatch everywhere. In addition, leveling/difficulty was broken, a lot of my favourite spells were taken out, the wildlife was boring, too much shiny shiny bloom effects, and the main quest was difficult to relate to. I lost faith in Bethesda until Fallout 3 was released.

Borderlands and Hellgate: London: Borderlands was better than H:L, let's get that clear first. H:L had significant combat problems which Borderlands didn't, such as poor recoil response leading to the feeling that you were shooting off paper-clips. But what really sucked for both games is that they emphasized the wrong parts of the RPG genre, it was all loot and leveling, no actual story, characters, or decisions. I quit both after a while because I couldn't give a damn about the world enough to continue playing. Hugely disappointing, I'm still waiting for a good FPS/RPG along the lines of Vampires: the Masquerade Bloodlines, which is the only success in that hybrid genre so far, and even that title has its flaws.

GTA4: Horrible performance on my PC and that crap with the 'friends' constantly calling you. Also, they decided to keep the outdated save game system which should have been abandoned years ago, but that wasn't really a factor in my disappointment.

Dark Sector. I bought that crap game day one... ugh. From that day on, I decided to do my research and make sure not to buy a bad game. Never again!
Funny, that's exactly what happened to me, only for me it was the new Turok; I'd had tons of fun with the original on the N64, so I thought I was in for a treat... and then I took a 60-Euro dive headlong into one of the biggest piles of shit I've ever played.

I don't necessarily expect this to happen again, and I've been fairly cautious from then on, but I have put myself at risk by pre-ordering the new AvP... I'm optimistic, though.

I haven't looked into AvP myself so I can't really help you out with my insight on that. It looks like it could be good but I would have to play the demo to get a true feel for it. I've found that a demo can tell a hell of a lot about a game. Remember a little game called 'Fracture' that came out a while ago? It got some coverage in E3 a long while ago and I thought it might be genuinely fun... then I played the demo and correctly predicted the horrible reviews that would come out a few weeks later.

And you reminded me of the drive to get the game... I had to go to 4 different stores to get Dark Sector because it wasn't stocked anywhere except for Gamestop...

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky.

Me being a huge fan of Time and Darkness, I decided not to look up anything and avoid everything related to Sky as much as possible. When I finally got the game, I quickly found out it's close to the same game.

40 bucks for a few small features and extras weren't worth it at all.

Usually to fix most of the problems, CA releases a patch or an expansion that fixes most issues. I have only played medieval 2 so far, it surpassed my expectations. If empire is on any level with me2 then I'm happy.

It seemed that PC Gamer liked the game, giving it like an 80%+ or something, I'm not entirely sure whether that was just devs paying for limelight or not though, probably a bit of column a and a bit of column b.

Another thing that's starting to get me down is the new security features on most new games. Either constant Internet req or only 3 installs. When I want to play Silent Hunter 5 (I play 3 atm) its 75% of the time because, internet is down for repairs (thanks cogeco) or something or other is wrong with connection.

Assassin's Creed - A game with a fantastic premise let down by uninspired repetitive gameplay and ridiculously boring lab sections

GTA4 - Take everything that was fun about previous GTA games and remove it.

FarCry 2 - Probably one of the most frustrating games I've ever played.Traded it in a few days after buying it

Xenosaga 2.

Me: Hurray!!! Time to get some answers to all the crazy shit that happened in the first one.
Game: Nope, no answers for you. Time for a detour to a story that focuses on stupid, annoying, and cliche characters no one gives a shit about with little relevance to the main plot, never ending techno music, a battle system that somehow manages to be more boring than the one in the first, and window washing!
Me: *cries tears of blood*

Honestly, the only redeeming factor of the game (besides the music that isn't techno) I could find is how short the game is. Normally a JRPG, especially one like Xenosaga, being about 15 hours long would be unforgivable but that was probably the only thing that saved the disk from being hurled onto the freeway.

Turok.
Me and my friends were really psyched about this game and the direction it had taken from the time we were younger. We were thinking about all the cool things we could do together and all that jazz. Then the game came out and it was god-awful and I was so completely and thoroughly let down at each and every point in the game. I mean if the game just you know worked I would have loyally played the thing, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

I was saddened by Gears of War. I only have the first one, and only intend to get the second one when I learn that it's price is less than $30.00. I kept hearing from many of my shooter-oriented
friends that Gears of War was possibly the greatest shooter to ever grace this depressing planet, so only about 3 months ago, I bought it. While it was incredible fun to play, the game failed to create a universe for me the way games like Mass Effect and Escape Velocity Nova have been able to do. I also found myself entirely uninterested in the characters and less inclined to care about the plot.

Fable II; Molyneux, you bastard! There was so much hype for that game that didn't deliver, I almost started crying.

Operation Flashpoint looked awsome , then after playing it for about an hour realised it was actually really just too realistic. I appreciate a difficulty curve but COME ON but man that game was hard :S

the newest installment in the Prince of Persia heritage, they took their already fully functional, dare I say fun, combat system, and threw that right out the window.

Dragon Age: Origins because in any game I play I want to feel like I'm the hero/villan/important person. DA:O made me feel like the mute bodyguard that nobody liked but expected to save the world. It felt like there was no point in leveling up or getting better gear except for a minor amount of survivability, and the abuse doled out on you buy your suposedly closest and most trusted allies was far less then fun. I will admit to being impressed by the fact a game could actually make me care about what the NPC's thoughts about me were, but they just made me feel like the fact that I was SAVING THE WORLD FROM EVIL meant absolutely nothing to nobody.

final fantasy 12. I own and love every final fantasy game, even the gameboy advance ones and little side ones like chocobo's dungeon. I just did not enjoy ff12.
