Finding out that the cannon outside Princess Peach's castle in Super Mario 64 does, in fact, serve a purpose. This was before myself and many of my friends had taken our first shaky steps into Internet Land, you see, so rumors were everywhere about the fabled Top of the Castle, and what might be waiting up there.
From the Key at the Bottom of the Lake, to angling your fall when you die in that all-clouds-and-red-coins stage, to jumping over the invisible wall blocking you from the Princess Peach/Bowser painting on the first floor over the castle, I'd heard all of the supposed methods... Except getting all 120 stars. Apparently, none of my friends had thought of that.
I was utterly shocked when I got that last star and stepped outside to find the cannon unlocked and ready to blast me to the top of the castle... And the prize couldn't have been greater. 99 lives, a special third jump, and a Yoshi cameo! It was amazing, at the time.
