I don't get it. More militant atheists stand up and declare from the rooftops that marriage is a purely religious institution, but when it comes to gay marriage, they insist that it be put into law.
You can't have your cake and eat it.
(If you don't regard marriage as a religious institution, then please ignore this post.)
Marriage is both a religious and secular institution. The problem is they're giving religious reasons against secular civil marriages.
It's also worth noting that nobody is forcing churches to marry gays, nor are all churches against gay marriage, so the religious argument against civil marriage is kind of...Crap.
I attended a very nice religious ceremony to wed two lesbians back when my state still defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman. It's almost like the two can be separate or something.
Also, I've never really seen anyone claim that marriage is solely religious and then demand equal rights.
Incidentally, religious reasons to oppose civil marriage is exactly trying to "have your cake and eat it too."
To paraphrase the Bible, you should remove the plank from your own eye before attempting to remove the speck from your neighbours'.
Personally, I'm fine with "never the twain shall meet." If there is to be government documented marriage, however, it should not be interfered with by religious bodies.
