Do you need to play the first two enjoy bioshock infinite? If not how much more does having played the first two add to the experience?

No, they're really not related in any significant way. You'll be fine playing Infinite. Also, the second one wasn't made by Irrational anyways.

There are some callbacks and references, but you absolutely do not have to play the previous games in order to get into Infinite.

I know you don't NEED to hear one more guy say the same thing but:
You're fine with just Infinite.
My sister didn't play the first Bioshock and she likes Infinite.
She hasn't even asked me any questions regarding the first one so I guess there really isn't anything in there that you need to play the first one to get.

I did a little fanboy squeal when I saw the wrench.
I don't even know why that was so special.
But it was the SAME EXACT WRENCH.

Have you finished the game yet?

Because, well... hehe. Oh, just finish the game if you haven't.

Yeah, anyway, you don't need to play the first. Though I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you do anyway, in addition to infinite.

The second one doesn't matter at all. You MIGHT enjoy the game a little more if you've played the first one. But you should really play Bioshock 1 for it's own sake as well. It's an amazing game. As is Infinite.

Its worth playing Bioshock & Bioshock 2, just remember the sequel is not canon. Bioshock Infinite is a self contained story and you do not need to play the previous games to get into it.

Imo Infinite has borrowed heavily from Bioshock 2 in some of the game mechanics and the theme of the story, cant really explain how without spoilers so you would have to see for yourself. The game is unrelated though so again no need to to play it, still you should really consider playing them.

You certainly don't need to play the first few games, but (no spoilers) the ending to infinite will be far more interesting if you played the first one.

Highly recommend it anyway, it's a great game.

I have finished Infinite.
It's just that the wrench was the first throwback I saw and it's the only one I can mention without spoiling anything.

There were a few other throwbacks before the wrench. The first one I noticed was that the baptist entering into Columbia says "Is it someone new?" when he sees you for the first time. In Bioshock 1, the first splicer that attacks you in the bathysphere also says "Is it someone new?".

Omg I thought I was the only person that noticed that. I had a squee when I heard him say that.
