Just got this game from my friend, played it today up until the point that Atlas' family dies in the sub and i gotta say...it really is not that great. It is not bad, the story is good and the atmosphere is awesome but nothing else stands out. What am I missing?

Oh and the hacking...it was cool the first few times but GOD now it just breaks the flow when i stop to hack a turret in the middle of a firefight.

You're probably missing originality.
The game is done well, but it just feels stale and over done, if you're into steampunk you'll love it because there are so few well done steam punk games, but otherwise you will probably not see the appeal.

Exactly the same 'ere, heh.

Last night I did some Resident Evil 4 instead, and today, Theme Hospital. I feel like playing some Age of Empires II tonight, followed by some PES. But going back to Bioshock somehow doesn't rank top of the list of 'things I feel like doing in the near future'.

Use them
Only put a " / " after the first bracket in the bold one.

Anyway maybe Bioshock just isn't for you?

To be honest, I thought this too. It didn't feel particularly brilliant to me, so I didn't really get into it. Ok, it looked nice and original, but the gameplay was abit 'meh' and shallow.

Iv gotta admit i agree, it looks fairly nice (its not the most stunning game out there) but it lacks quite alot. For me it was the combat that spoiled it, pretty much everything boiled down to stun with lightning shoot a couple of times, all the other spells were mostly useless. Even the big daddy fights were just plant a load of bombs in a doorway, shoot at him once then 1 hit him when he runs through the door.

Each to their own though

I think Bioshocks story is well above average. Okay sadly the game stories average quality is lacking but still. Atmosphere is good but could have been so much better if the moral choices actually meant anything or would have been conveyed a bit more personal. The protagonist simply is one of those deafmutes that leaves the player to watch a film with 2 different endings.

The gameplay of bioshock is repetetive but, lets say, solid. Use X which is good against enemy Y, rinse repeat.

Anyways, yea I can agree nothing else stands out. Game developers should in my opinion make more difficult games again. And by difficult I don't mean deactivating vita chambers and making enemies take a thousand bullets. I mean more complex game mechanics, but wait I guess that wouldn't sell.

I recommend playing it through nevertheless because the story still gets a bit better.

It is a bit overyhyped.

I didn't like it, really. Got through the first boss and didn't really want to play it anymore.

Thank God I wasted only $5.

Bioshock is heavily overrated because people are so starved of games with it's style and quality of presentation. It is quite good but I think that it would have been reasonable to expect better.

To the people saying you should finish it, I defiantly will, its not bad I just expected so much more considering the great reviews. (And possibly the fact that my friend keeps saying it is the BEST shooter EVERRRRRRRRRR).

Hahaha lol!!

Let me repeat the story is good and the atmospher is awsome.
Uhm why was it a good game again?
Story and Atmosphere do not make a game...maybe a movie but not a game...

Game play is MILES ahead of everything else that matters, then those two aspects can maybe utter a squeak.

Sounds like you're playing it because everyone said how it's "TEH BEST GAEM EVAR!!!1!".
Take away the hype, and you've got a solid shooter with fun RPG elements and an interesting story. Once you add the hype, however, it just sucks the life out of the game.

Bioshock isn't industry changing, but it's a solid game.
Then again, maybe it's just not a game for you.

Play a little further. 'BioShock' slaps you in the face sooner or later - in a good way!

You should try the Brothers in Arms series. It's a bit repetitive, but the difficulty lies in the tactics the enemy uses. You're trying to flank them, but naturally the AI tries to do so too, so sometimes you end up switching positions because everybody's constantly trying to flank the other guy... until someone sets up a positional trap or something.

Bioshock was disappointing for me as well. I think that's mainly because I waited until after I'd finished Fallout 3 to get it.

The good thing about Bioshock is that it gets very, very meaningful. It's all basically a colossal criticism of Ayn Rand, of which I approve.

However, meaning isn't exactly what gamers are trained by other games to look for in a game. And so far as most other things go, Bioshock is fairly average. I'd say that it's highly acclaimed merely for its aspirations to art and its very cool "art deco" presentation. Especially now, it's getting a little old to be called good gameplay.
