Bioshock is...meh?

I was similarly dissatisfied with Bioshock. I simply cant comprehend what so many people see in it. The setting is imaginative and eerie, but I cant fathom where this "good story" malarkey is coming from. 90% of the games exposition is done through monotonous little audio tapes. I did enjoy that nutcase Sander Cohen to some extent (I lol'ed at his "labour pains"). But the most dramatic moment of the game (which was well executed I admit) was completely ruined by one of the worst displays of melodrama Ive ever seen and heard in gaming just following it.
Oh NOES!1!!one The hidden manipulator proven to be of questionable morals turns out to be teh villainous!?! WoW is meh!

To make matters worse I found the FPS mechanics, which make up most of the game to be incredibly clunky. Overall the biggest memory I take from Bioshock is how the game contains one or two moments that I literally found infuriating. I wont be playing the second.

Get to the part where you meet Andrew Ryan... I can't tell you what happens because I dont want to spoil it for you but if you've been paying attention to the game it'll all make sense... That's also where the game pulls you back in if you've been lazily sleepwalking through it.

I loved the game because of it's originality and gameplay. Also because I had'nt played a good RPG in ages!

The gameplay is meh, the story after the MASSIVE plot twist is distinctly not

Bioshock's story is mediocre (can't say derivative, since it can be demonstrably proven that everything is), but what really pisses me off its how it's presented. On tapes. Walking up and pressing play on tape recorders. That's how you get the story. Pressing play.

That's like, one step away from JRPG mandatory wordy text blocks.

I played Bioshock because of all the hype, and I gotta say I'm pretty sure a wait in an orthodontist's office would be more exciting. I don't feel like I'm part of the story in Bioshock, I feel like I'm playing an FPS while someone does a radio drama in the background. If there's an experience that hurls you out of the immersion faster, I can't think of it.

I think I just fell in love with the art-deco steampunk underwater world. It was so original. Beats generic space/urban shooter setting any day. Plus the combats solid, there's a cool degree of upgrading and exploring and interesting ways to beat certain foes. And the story is actually interesting. That's what set it apart for me.

Bioshock was very slow for me up until I actually defeated the first boss, and after that I was hooked. It does look like a very plain game at the point you're at; all I can say is keep going. You haven't even gotten to the forest yet. It's an amazing experience that every gamer, whether you like it or not, should experience at least once.

I felt the gameplay was fairly unremarkable, but I think the same of BioShock as I do of Mass Effect: I was willing to overlook the flaws because of how immersive and atmospheric both games were.

Like i've said before..Bioshock loses it's charm over time. What was groundbreaking and beautiful and artsy and different about it when it first was released is now expected and too well known about to give it that wow factor it had years ago.

I thought hte storyline was unique and it certainly had a great feel. I hated the combat, though; every fight degenerated into hacking and taking pictures, with guns only being used after a few minutes of side quests. It just kind of broke the action up to the point of total unrealism, especially the hacking in mid-combat.

Since you all asked so nicely for my opinion, they should have made the auto-hack items useful by making them the only way to hack during combat. And the camera system should have been used only after combat and not force us into taking pics of enemies while they're about to cleave our head off by making it the only source of A-grade photos.

I was quite underwhelmed by the gameplay too. Didn't think that much of the storyline, but I treated it as a virtual tour around a captivating setting, albiet where some junkies try to stab me every now and then and I kill a small child every block.

Just got this game from my friend, played it today up until the point that Atlas' family dies in the sub and i gotta say...it really is not that great. It is not bad, the story is good and the atmosphere is awesome but nothing else stands out. What am I missing?
Exactly the same 'ere, heh.

Last night I did some Resident Evil 4 instead, and today, Theme Hospital. I feel like playing some Age of Empires II tonight, followed by some PES. But going back to Bioshock somehow doesn't rank top of the list of 'things I feel like doing in the near future'.
Oddly enough, your feelings on Bioshock are my feelings on Resident Evil 4. RE4 is a great big bag of "meh". So I stopped playing it and put in Ratchet & Clank,

The medical and Neptunes bounty part of the game are the two most boring chapters. Wait until you get to meet Sander Cohen, then you'll be having some real fun.
that bit is pretty cool actually...

XD
me and my bro are trying to get the Historian achievement, so he plays the game and i have the laptop :p
we're boring in that way...

Oh and the hacking...it was cool the first few times but GOD now it just breaks the flow when i stop to hack a turret in the middle of a firefight.
I sir, greatly disagree with you!!!.. Even though I've never played the game.
The reviews/previews looked nice. 0:)
Perhaps I should lower my expectations for when I actually play it and not be so influenced by trailers. OO!!! Shiney red ball!! *Runs off*

I have to agree here...Everyone makes such a big fuss about it, but it's really just a normal fps with a little elecrtoshock things from your hands, that doesn't really change any gameplay.

Well, I didn't get far into RE4 last time, but I'm trying to now, and I'm starting to like it more (or it could be because I've been watching shitloads of live streams of RE5)

I've tried Ratchet & Clank on the PSP, couldn't hold my attention for long, so meh :p
