First, The Movie.
There's not a whole lot of information floating around but am I the only one who will be really disappointed with the movie if it follows the storyline of Bioshock? I've played Bioshock and one of the reasons I love it was because I was involved. I personally think that it should be the prequel to the game, Bioshock was set in one of the most original places I have ever played in a video game.
I would've played the game if it were just exploring Rapture before it became a run down splicer infested hole. I honestly think that there is potential for a great movie in Pre-Bioshock Rapture.
Second, Bioshock 2. Just like the movie the only place left to go is prequel but I think it should differ from the film in a few ways.
I think that Bioshock 2 should go to when rapture was built and it was (I'm assuming) a paradise, then cut out short of the actual fall out of rapture. I'm aware that this game would take out a great deal of the atmosphere of Bioshock but it would provide great exposition, of which I am a fan.
Then Bioshock 3 should cover the complete fall out of Rapture ending where Bioshock started. I honestly think that is the best way to keep the Bioshock games going. If anyone else thinks any different I would love to hear you're suggestions... then tell you you're wrong

I didn't like Bioshock. But I know most of the story, and I think the movie would be perfectly fine if it followed the game's story.

Personally, I think that you need to keep the flavor of the game consistant throughout the sequals. Ya' know, so you get what you were expecting to get? A different way to do what you're describing is easy. Just have the movie cover the pre-Bioshock stuff. We already know that slicers escape from Rapture, so perhaps you try to follow them, and get stuck somewhere spooky?

Id prefer a pre Bioshock movie and then just leave it at that, leaving the original, effectively untouched.

The movie will fail for the same reason many video game movies such as doom and resident evil. A key factor that pushes resident evil and bioshock and doom is that you want to keep playing to find the story for yourself, and I just don't think that will translate when someone else is doing it.

Movies based on video games universally suck. No exceptions.

Yes, but even though they suck, they can be priceless gems. See: Doom. "Semper-fi, mother fucker."

I personally have high hopes for the Bioshock movie. A story of Rapture before and as it falls would simply be awesome.
Actually most of the video game movie adaptions suck because well theres very little story. So they have the lee-way to change stuff around.

Bioshock on the other hand cannot change stuff around because the storys tight. And if bioshock the movie sucks people will die..

I'm happy with my copy of Bioshock (technically my friends, but hey), so I frankly don't care how the movie turns out. That said, if they muck it up, I'll finally have some use for that stockpile of fire-bombs and tear-gas I have lying around...

For the film at least, a prequel is most likely - there is already a lot of background information to work with, and a lot of room to expand upon that info, which is a good starting place for any film. I would say that the main issue is not to produce a brilliant plot, as the plot is already there - Atlas vs Ryan, fall of Rapture, all the info is there really, but what the main challenge would be is keeping the atmosphere of Rapture, which was presented excellently in the game.

Bioshock 2 has a lot of limitations to work around - it cannot really be set in the glory days of Rapture as that was a paradise, so there's no real incentive to do anything, except perhaps smuggle contraband in and out under Fontaine's command. It could be set during the fall of Rapture, but again, the plot would not be anything we did not already know.

People seem to be avoiding the concept of an actual sequel - Rapture has been a hellhole for a long time before Bioshock, so Bioshock 2 could quite easily still have Rapture as the main setting, perhaps one where the protaganist from the first is attempting to rebuild and re-establish Ryan's dream. Either that, or it could show Ryan's nightmare of the surface and Rapture becoming mingled; In the 'evil ending'
it made it seem as if John was attempting to attack people from the surface
so a world in which splicers are ravaging the world is not impossible - so Bioshock 2 could be set in a future, more urban area, which could also provide incentive for more of a survival mechanic - if you do not start off with plasmids, you are immediately at a disadvantage to those that are up to their eyeballs in the stuff.

So whilst a prequel film is very likely, I do not feel a prequel game is - it would just be too limiting.

Actually most video game/movie adaptations fail because that geordie prat Paul WS Anderson or that irritating german Uwe Bol get near them. If they picked a good director some of them may come out ok.

I like the idea of the Pre-Bioshock
But i think you should play as Fontaine (or someone close to him) leading up to events of Bioshock
Preferbly including the new years eve riots

the bioshock movie will probably some overpriced cash cow that will follow the story scene for scene, but the bioshock sequel has alot of potential. i mean, the first game youre stuck in an underwater city. but, the sequel could take place in a much more open world.
