Sounds good to me. You seem to be getting a lot of 'love or hate' responses. Personally I think the deep setting and great story for a backdrop would make for a fantastic musical, if done very well. There's a lot of opportunity for it to just be a cheap ripoff that nobody will take seriously, but there's potential.

I'm not sure animation is the best way to go, though. There's some good animations that are worth watching, but the vast majority of them are just too limited by the fact that they're animations. An actual short series using live video with good actors and singers, given appropriate props and sets, would work fantastic for this, but I don't think that's what you have in mind.

You'd have to slot Sander Cohen in there somewhere
He's like a "Free Song" ticket

As a serious thing, this would blow. But as a 'there's no way we're being serious about this' vid on youtube, it could prove entertaining. Give me a few hours or days and I'll think up a song.(or two.)

Oh I am quite serious. Yes.
I have a MIDI keyboard, composing software, and a musical background (not just saying that. I actually took courses in theory, composition, and orchestration) so I'm able to write the music if you allow me the time.

I think you should make a musical number for all the key players and locations. As in having a piece for Steinmen (medical), Cohen (Fort Frolic), Atlas (Arcadia), Fontaine (Proving Grounds), Tenenbaum (Orphanage/Safe House), and Ryan (Hephaestus). Connect the rest with dialogue, follow the story somewhat loosely, feature a dancing Big Daddy, etc. Get the lyrics, let me know what style/mood you have in mind, and I'll see if I can't put it to music.

Personally, this is what I originally had in mind. I only decided to switch to animation because I didn't think I could get enough people to act this out who would actually take it seriously. Most of the time when you hear a videogame is being turned into a musical, your first reflex is "No. Absolutely NOT." But if there were some good actors out there willing to do this, that would be great.

Great! See? I knew the Escapist was the right place to do this. Each character would have their own mood of song, but as for the story check out that one guy's Bioshock breakdown reviews in the review section to see what I'm going for story wise. It will be about the fall of Rapture.

Here is something I scratched up for the occasion.

If you want to watch a good musical, watch Repo: The Genetic Opera. Bioshock would be terrible as a musical imho.

Reminds me of why I could barely get into Romeo and Juliet. The only reasonably sane character was Mercutio, and they killed him off.
Seriously.

On a side note, musicals are horrid.
That is all.
You mean "since Disney ruined them with it's *shudder* High School Musical and all of it's gayness is a disgrace to the Musical genre.

What hasn't been addressed yet is whether or not people want this to be more along the lines of "We're not taking ourselves seriously" Tongue-in-Cheek, or if we want it to be a "Dark, Moving and Creepy, yet Catchy-IGN" serious tone. It could always be a mixture of both, But I think that this needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. About your "horrible singing" talents. I'm pretty sure we could use your talent one way or another. This really all is jus for fun, so if you get a decent mic, then send me a voice sample.

the prob is, i have 2 voices, one is cabaret, the other is more classical, but both are pretty bad...

Ever since my sister forced me to watch Grease six times in a row, musicals have had a special place on my list of things that have to die.
They kick-started the "painfull and gruesome" section.

If this weren't tongue-in-cheek, I would highly disapprove.

Personally I think it could work even if done seriously, but that'd require a LOT more time and effort to pull it off. Someone here mentioned Repo: The Genetic Opera, and I was kind of thinking of that for this. Just showing that creepy Splicer aspect of what the citizens of Rapture have been reduced to, similar to the graverobber from Repo. Then add the actual plotline of Bioshock into the mix, and it could actually turn out really well. However, like I said, it's hard to take animation seriously, so that'd require a lot of effort put into live-action acting and sets.

I know what you mean. Problem is, since this is more of a forum effort, it is very unlikely we could cooperate with the actors very well as a forum, and since there is a love/hate thing going on, The tongue-in-cheek one will probably be the foothold for the project until we actually know what we are doing. With the comedy one, we could still tell the story pretty well, and we have more room for mistakes and amateurish production since it's technically "supposed" to be like that. See the poster I made, and that pretty much describes the feeling I'm going for.
