He is 100% correct, I wouldn't call JRPGs RPGs at all, you don't play a freaking role, you've got no choices, you're going from point a to point b, and that's it, sure it's the same in western RPGs to a degree, you're going to slay the dragon and save the world at the end, but hell you've at least got a lot of choices on how to get there and giving your character a different motivation.
In JRPGs you're force fed the story, which is fine if they were called "Interactive Movies" but they are not, they are called RPGs, which means role playing game, we don't get to get into the role and make choices.
