Bioware Hacked

I tried logging into my EA account but couldnt, went to check my emails and found this:

Yesterday (June 14), we learned that a hacker gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare community server system associated with the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers' data and launched an ongoing evaluation of the seriousness of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. However, hackers may have obtained your user account name and password, email address, country and date of birth, as well as other information (if any) that you may have associated with your EA Account. As a result, we have changed your password to ensure account security.

Damn hackers! when will it end!

Sounds like BioWare needs to start encrypting their damn passwords. Seriously, this is like the first lesson everyone learns when they are even remotely going to have to do something with storing passwords, but apparently most companies just don't bother.

Everybody: if a website allows you to retrieve your actual password when you forgot it (as opposed to resetting it to a new one), they are not storing it safely. I know you always hear advice about not ever using the same password anywhere, but we all know that that isn't really practical. I would however recommend that if you know a site isn't storing your password safely, you don't use the same password there as you use for the important stuff (like your e-mail address that they also have).

Edit: I just checked and the Escapist appears to be doing it right.

There is no police on the internet, so people can pretty much do whatever the hell they please. Governments (and businesses) need to get on this shit, but as usual they are slow as hell.

As much as i don't like these 'hackers' messing with all that 'consumerdata', this might actually turn out to be a good thing in making the general public more aware on the issues of privacy and dataprotection.
The next generation of sys-admins and software-developers will be much more focused on these issues once it has happend to you.

I got the email as well. Was funny timing too since I just installed NWN2 again and went on their forums and changed the PW for it. Guess I have to do it again. Thankfully I keep different passwords for everything I use and Bioware have no information on me thats any use to anyone like credit card details etc.

This is exactly what I thought. I mean yeah sure hacking and what not, go them. Hacking something that's 10 years old, and generally goes ignored by most people is kind of like saying "yeah I just stole this rotting sandwich from an unguarded dumpster. I'm a master thief "
