At the risk of sounding like a total dick, I think I may be bipolar? I've never had it checked, by my emotions tend to switch at the drop of the hat, or even for no reason at all. Usually going from the highest of higs to the lowest of lows, for little to know reason.

I've thought about checking it out, but I honestly have no idea.

My ex-girlfriend suffered (and still does) from a personality disorder which was like Bi-Polar, but over shorter timespans; or at least that's how it was characterised by the Psychologist.

She would go from being happy and excited to smashing picture frames against the wall and cutting herself with the broken glass. The other side was just as bad as when she was on a high she'd regularly party very hard, and take lots of drugs racking up large bills with bad people. This whole cycle could be over the course of one day.

The night before we got together we had to get the police to take her into hospital as she was out of control and trashing the house. In retrospect that should have been a red flag. Well more like a marching band Red Flag parade actually.

It was hard to live with, but recently she's been getting more help, and I hear she's doing a lot better with new medication.

I know this isn't very reassuring. My advice is to take what help's offered and stick with it. Have people MAKE you stick with it if it comes to that.

I once got a lecture from a guy with Bipolar II. He said that the thing that had helped him the most was living as stable and organized a life as he could. That is: he stopped drinking, he started to eat and sleep regularly, exercise every day and so on. To maintain self-control he externalized his motivations in the form of the "alter-ego" Captain Sensible.
