I'm pretty sure this thread hasn't been made before xD.
Allow me to explain. For my dad's birthday this month I'm looking for a game he would like. The problem is that it's quite difficult to pick out something he would like, whereas I pretty much like everything. Like Jim I too like a balanced diet of video games. My dad however, never has much time, so he spends most of his gaming time with games like the FiFA series or the Need For Speed games. Games that can be played in really short bursts before being frustrating. If it came out two years ago, he's played pretty much every game in those franchises. He's kind of afraid to jump into another franchise, which is understandable, considering how much games costs these days. I've been thinking about getting him Dirt 3.
He also likes a good shooter every now and then, but with his age, his skill in FPS games has gotten drastically weaker over the past 10 years. Many games these days use complex mechanics, and he shies away from that too. You might say then that he would like games like BF3 or the recent CoD games but those games are so time-sensitive -> "Return to the combat zone, naab!" that he wouldn't like those either.
For a very long time he's played WoW for four years straight until he got absolutely sick of it. I think, because he played it for so long, he was able to remember the various mechanics and difficulties of the game.
Understand that some of the things that are absolutely obvious to us, he would need several minutes of explanation. When explained, he would then not play the game because he just doesn't understand it. My dad is NOT an idiot, but he considers gaming to be a time of complete and total relaxation, something he can do mindlessly. Things that explain themselves like:
-Tiny Bang Story: Find this puzzle piece while listening to amazing music.
-Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit: Ram this car. Criminals bad, police good. Be the first in the race.
-FiFa games: Manage your team, get the ball in the net.
No multiplayer. Because f*ck multiplayer.
EDIT 1: Any suggestion is welcome, the game does not have to be recent. My dad and myself do not care about age or graphics. Ultima 0: Akalabeth is a little too extreme as well xD
