there is only one logical thing to do.,
/1/build a pipe bomb
/2/but it into the console and set it to go off via remote detonation,
/3/drop it off on the store counter
/4/leave
/5/???????
/6/problem solved.
Come on. I need a real solution.
Problem is, unless you have documentation of their promises, there might not be anything you can do about it. If everything fails, well maybe you'll just have to trade it in, or play PS3 games.
Fuck my life.

And the outer box didn't say "Plays PS2 games too"?
It's just a plain cardboard box with a fragile sticker on it.
Then I fear your only chance is a change of heart from the store owners. Perhaps they're thinking "We should have not sold that PS3 for something it isn't, if only that customer returned so we can give a full refund".
Not very likely but unless you have any proof that they sold a backwards-compatible console you cannot do anything about it.
The ticket from the cashregister perhaps?

Geez. Calm down. Go buy a used PS2 for about 40 bucks. They're not that expensive now. I'm hoping you didn't buy a PS3 just to play PS2 games. So improvise.

Backwards compatibility is a huge selling point for me-- an aging, decrepit gamer.

i'd be sad too

Stop bitching and play your new PS3? What they said was perfectly correct. The PS3 CAN play SOME PS2 games.
No it can't. The PS3 box says that the PS3 I have doesn't play ANY PS2 games, and I checked the Sony website to see if my PS2 games were compatible. They are. Yet BJ's told me it could.

... What?

Buy inFAMOUS, Batman, Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted. Do you have a PS2, or did you trade it in when you got the PS3, or did you never have one?

Bring it back to the shop with a reciept, saying that the console was advertised to be backwards compatible. They'll either give it you straight away or take a thirty minute test (mandatory in a few companies) and ask you to come back then.

Either way, avoid being hostile. It's probably a simple mistake, and you can get a free replacement or the equivalent of one fairly easily - pissing them off isn't gonna help you out.

Yes, it can. Put God of War 2 in any PS3 and I'll guarantee you it'll work.

Actually, there are several types of PS3. There's the ones that play all Ps2 games, the ones that play some ps2 games, and ones that play no Ps2 games.

He said:

His PS3 is one of the non-backwards compatible versions, and the box says so.

Sony's website says that the two games he tried to play will work on backwards compatible PS3's.

The website, BJ's*snicker*, claimed the PS3 was a backwards compatible version.

The standard practice in these kind of situations is to request that they open the box and check the original box to check their claims. You should do that even if you're sure that it's legitimate because you could have a box of soap instead of the console and they would claim that you put it there and you wouldn't be able to do a thing.

I work in a store and I can confirm that this happened with us (because some people that worked in our warehouse needed a VCR... they could at least steal a DVD :) ) so always check before you buy anything especially if it's in a cardboard box without any writing or seal.

To summarize: You're stuck with the console but you received a good lesson for future purchases. But you sure had some guts to go and buy a console in a store called BJ's.

It can't read PS2 discs. But you can buy certain games over the PSN network.

Make sure you are in the right, because you can sue them. I would just say talk to the manager, and see if you can work something out.
