are you positive they said backwards compatibility or plays ps2 games cause if it was the "backwards compatibility" they could be getting away with it cause it would still play ps1 games

Cool Story, Bro.

I'll just leave now.
same. and how old are you. not to call you naive but usually when something like this happens you can complain about and do not much else. Also, it kinda seems like common knowledge to me. Or maybe thats just cuase i did a throwdown article on the 3 consoles for my school newspaper in the 6th grade and retain facts veyr well. Anyway, ive rambled so good luck and godspeed.

by the way if you really wanna sue BJs said that it had backwards compatibility and it didnt . you could technically say thats false advertsing but im 13 so check up on that.

Come on. I need a real solution.
sounds perfectly logical to me

Stop bitching and play your new PS3? What they said was perfectly correct. The PS3 CAN play SOME PS2 games.
No it can't. The PS3 box says that the PS3 I have doesn't play ANY PS2 games, and I checked the Sony website to see if my PS2 games were compatible. They are. Yet BJ's told me it could.
Yes, it can. Put God of War 2 in any PS3 and I'll guarantee you it'll work.
Actually, there are several types of PS3. There's the ones that play all Ps2 games, the ones that play some ps2 games, and ones that play no Ps2 games.
Nope. The ones that are backwards compatible have a PS2 drive in them, whereas every other model can run only newer PS2 games (IE Smackdown vs Raw 2010 or God of War 2) but not older ones. Rule of thumb for whether it'll work or not is usually if it was released after the PS3 was.

You cant really do much. You could buy a ps2 i guess, they're like $90 now. plus you can download most games online. Maybe if you complain they'll give you a gift card or something.

If they're a legit business they will keep records of such promotions. You could pretty much return it on that basis and make the claim, they'll likely at least hear you out or replace it outright. If not, I would even press for a discount on a PS2 system from their store as compensation for the false advertising. Something similar happened with my original Xbox.

We'll Sony advertised a few months ago that they were going to give up on backwards compatibility completely.

Throw a rock at the window of the store and claim to be hitting a bug on the cement out front.

I'm rather surprised I seem to be only the second person to have suggested this: go back to the store and try to work things out. From what you state in the original post, it sounds like you haven't tried this yet.

Firstly, recognize what you hope to get out of this: a PS2 compatible PS3? A used PS2? A full refund?

Secondly, temper your expectations to what the store is likely to be willing and able to provide. Chances that they still have one of the old PS2 compatible PS3s in stock are most likely pretty low. Recognize that they may be taking little more than your word of mouth and your value as an ongoing consumer at their store as incentive to do the right thing. I hope you have the receipt.

Go in with what you have. Be polite. Be prepared that you may lose. That said, be firm and prepared to push. As the old expression goes, "Don't accept a 'no' from someone who doesn't have the power to say 'yes'." Ask to speak with the manager if necessary; be ready to come back if they aren't immediately available. Don't threaten to sue them- chances are they won't believe you have a lawyer on retainer, and you know what, they'd probably be right about that. But you _do_ have a case to make that if you don't walk out of there satisfied, they will probably not only lose you as a customer, but all your gamer friends who you will share this bad experience with. That might be worth the price of, say, a used PS2. And you _are_ in the right: remind them of what they advertised and that they haven't provided it.

I cannot stress enough to be polite. Go in like you assume this is all a mistake and that their fine, upstanding store will of course want to remedy it for their fine upstanding client. You may not feel that at all; you may feel like you want to tear out throats with your teeth. But fake it. Everyone wants to believe they're the good guy, and they're far more likely to want to give you what they want if they're giving it as "good-guy clerk providing excellent customer service to good-guy customer" than if they feel some asshat is trying to hammer them until they yield, in which case they will probably want to push back. Don't blow all your powder on the opening salvo, so to speak.

And hope they don't troll the Escapist forums.

Good luck!

BJ’s, or Blow Jobs as I will now call it, cheated me out of a lot of money. I went there about a month ago, and saw that they were selling a PS3 bundle with an 80gb backwards compatible PS3 with a free controller, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and Motorstorm at regular price. Naturally I took advantage of the deal, and bought a new console. Today I borrowed two PS2 games from my friend and tried to play them. Both said “Unsupported Data”. Looking closely at the box it said, “This system is not compatible with and will not play PlayStation 2 format software”. Checking the Sony website said that both titles worked flawlessly. What should I do? Do I sue BJ’s for lying (can I do that?) or refund it (refund time is already over, maybe I can argue?) or try to get one that is backwards compatible from BJ’s?
Only the very first PS3 - the 60GB one - can play PS2 games. The subsequent 40, 80, 120 and 250 cannot.

Oh ffs.

It doesn't have to be that big a drama. Just pack it up, take it back and get your money back if it really bothers you this much.

You bought it based on the premise it did things it didn't, provided you haven't damaged/registered anything yet you should have no problem getting refund. Doubly so if the staff told you it did the things it didn't.

Just take the old polite but stubborn route and a refund you shall have.

No, it can't, all new PS3's have no PS2 compatability at all...

You buy a PS2 to play PS2 games maybe? Use the PS3 for what it was made for? I mean seriously, you can't do anything, the console isn't broken, there's nothing wrong with it, and it's printed on the side of the box that it doesn't play PS2 games. However if that's all you wanted it for, then why didn't you buy a PS2 off ebay for 60$ and forget the PS3? If you bought a PS3 it should be for PS3 games.

Judging by the number of people on here who have no idea what the store is (it's Berkley and Jensen's, by the way) I don't think that's a tangible threat. But I like BJ's. I shop there all the time. I've never bought a game system from them but I have bought games and I've never had any problems. And don't those ads usually say somewhere "the store is not responsible for typographical errors"? Seems like that would absolve them. They could claim it meant to say "Does NOT play PS2 Games!"

Problem is, unless you have documentation of their promises, there might not be anything you can do about it. If everything fails, well maybe you'll just have to trade it in, or play PS3 games.
Fuck my life.
Uhhh... You just got a new console? Be happy with having a ps3.

You can return an item within thirty days if it is unfit for purpose under the sale of goods act in the UK this is a statutory right and cannot be damaged in any way by a retailers disclaimers.

Alternatively go and stand in their store protest loudly and in a polite but prolonged manner, this gives them two options they can have a customer escorted out by security, or give you what you want to go away. They should choose the latter as gripping potential customers and having them evicted is bad PR and if anything goes wrong you may sue.

I work in retail myself and I know the former works in the UK the latter is universal across time space and language barriers. As long as you don't call them Stupid f**ing canutes who cant find there arses with both hands and alsatian your okay!

Bring it back to the shop with a reciept, saying that the console was advertised to be backwards compatible. They'll either give it you straight away or take a thirty minute test (mandatory in a few companies) and ask you to come back then.

Either way, avoid being hostile. It's probably a simple mistake, and you can get a free replacement or the equivalent of one fairly easily - pissing them off isn't gonna help you out.
Agreed, go into the store and explain your position, most companies now are trying to be very customer service oriented and if you shop their frequently I'm sure they'll help you out.
